Inscribed on the verso of the frontispiece: "To my friend Peirson Hall with every good wish, Al Cohn, Jan 5, 1934." Biography of criminal lawyer Earl Rogers. Cohn was a journalist who covered many of Rogers' trials. At the time this book was inscribed, Pierson Hall had just become a U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California. He was later appointed by FDR as a federal judge.

Includes The Fall of the House of Usher, The Masque of the Red Death, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Black Cat, The Facts in the Case of M. Vlademar, The Gold-Bug, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Ernest Leonard Blumenschein (1874-1960) studied at the Art Students League of New York and the Academie Julian in Paris. He is best known as a painter of the American Southwest, but began his career as a book and magazine illustrator.

London: John Dicks. Hardcover. Very good. A volume in the "Dicks' Celebrated Works" series. Undated, but OCLC gives a date of 1888 for a nearly identical edition (publisher listed as "J. Dicks"). 136 pp, printed in double columns, bound in paper-covered boards with a mounted sheet of light orange paper on the front board (appears to be the front wrapper of a softcover edition) printed with the title and an illustration. Spine label partially perished. Binding tight, text clean. An uncommon edition.

Piazza & Cie. 10" x 7.5", 207 (1) pp, with 10 full-page color plates and many other color illustrations in the text. A fine copy in publishers illustrated cloth binding. Mario Laboccetta (1899-1988) was born in Naples, but moved as a young man to Paris, where he gained fame for his richly colored, detailed, and sometimes erotic illustrations for posters, magazines, and books -- most notably this volume and an edition of Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal.

A tall tale of a trout that walked on land, told by the owner of a Maine hunting and fishing camp. First published in 1904.

A scarce promotional work, with text offering descriptive and statistical information on tourist attractions, hydro-electric development, mining, timber resources, agriculture (fruit, sheep, hops, dairy, honey, tobacco), shipping and ports, fisheries, shipbuilding and whaling, railways and scenery, recreational opportunities, etc. Spine has been covered with clear tape, which extends about two inches onto each cover, and covers are somewhat edgeworn. Binding is sound and text clean.

A fine copy in near fine dust jacket with mild wear to the top edge. Laid in is "Opening Program, Temple of Religion and Tower of Peace," for an event held a Treasure Island on May 25, 1940. The book is organized into five sections: Development of the idea; the exhibits; the five artists and their murals; the Biblical garden, the building, and the Tower of Peace; and the programs, religious services, and peace meetings. An appendix lists personnel.

Boston: Lincoln & Edmands, 1827. Hardcover. Good. Tenth edition. pp [5], 6-107, [1], in worn contemporary marbled boards with leather spine. Spine has a few wormholes and is missing about 3/4 inch at the foot, but boards are well attached and binding sound overall. First six leaves have some loss near the base of the spine, but no more than 3-4 characters per page have been obscured. Early (1828) ownership signature of John Hersey of Dennysville [Maine] on front free endpaper, and again on the verso, but then dated 1833 in Pembroke. Light foxing throughout.

New York: Great American Tea Company, 1886. Near fine. Original chromolithograph advertising poster, 22 x 32 inches. A stunning print with exceptionally rich color, archivally backed. Professional restoration to edges and a few small spots on the printed area. Near fine. "Ten minutes for refreshments!" was the well-known cry of railroad conductors across the United States before dining cars became common on trains. Hungry and thirsty passengers would rush off the train and into the depot, where they scrambled to order and then bolt down their lunch under the watchful eye of conductor determined to keep the train on schedule. In this advertising print for the Great American Tea Company, the conductor stands in the doorway with pocket watch in hand, calming observing the chaos as customers (all white men served by Black waiters) frantically consume their food and beverages, some leaving smashed crockery in their wake as they rush to re-board the train. Lacks front free endpaper, cloth worn and faded, some foxing. Good. Dr. Elijah White was Presbyterian minister who first arrived in Oregon with his wife in 1836 in association with the Methodist Mission in the Willamette Valley. He made overland journeys in both directions during the next decade, and was appointed Indian Agent in 1841. He became an earnest booster for the Oregon Territory, promoting its settlement through letters published in several national newspapers. Wagner-Camp 144:1; Howes A-131.

Light sunning to spine, else fine. This precedes the American edition by two years. A native of England, Richard Baxter Townshend traveled to the American West in 1869 and spent five years wandering and, briefly, cattle ranchng in Colorado. After leaving Colorado, he decided to see what New Mexico was like and established a trading post in Jemez. This book contains colorful accounts of his various travels and adventures from that time.

Original cloth binding, Moderate rubbing to edges and corners of boards; binding tight, a few pages with finger smudges, but generally clean. Inglis (1845 -1908) ran an Indigo Plantation on the borderlands between India and Nepal in the years 1863-1875. He later moved to Australia and became a politician in colonial New South Wales. An avid big game hunter, he writes here about both plantation life and hunting for tiger, buffalo, bear, rhinoceros, and leopard.

Includes staff photos and bios, list and photos of all graduates, list of trophies and awards, messages from various school dignitaties, letters to the editor, student writing (most describing what their school experience has meant to them), poetry in both English and Samoan, and typical yearbook photos of campus life, sports, clubs, and other activities (identifying students who participated in each). An interesting and scarce record of this educational institution, which was merged into the National University of Samoa in 1997.

Baruch was an advisor to Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the New Deal era and played a role in the formation of the National Recovery Administration.
