Description:
North Hollywood CA: (published by the author). Fine. 1986 (c.1985). 2nd printing. Stapled wraps. [as-new, from the publisher's (my) private stock]. A handy index to the major creative credits (directors; writers/authors; selected performers) of Rod Serling's classic TV series. This had its genesis in my frustration at not being able to use Marc Scott Zicree's otherwise terrific 1982 book "The Twilight Zone Companion" as a quick reference to answer such burning questions as "what was that episode whose title I can't remember in which Lee Marvin played an ex-boxer who manages a fighting robot?" or "how many episodes of the show did Don Siegel direct?" -- because it lacked a full index. This cheesed me off so much that I compiled and published my own; this is it. (I believe that subsequent editions of the Zicree book did enhance the index, so if you have one of those you won't need this; but if you only have the original 1982 edition, this… Read More

New York/London: G.P. Putnam's Sons. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1930 (c.1929). 1st [U.S.] Edition. Hardcover. [nice clean solid book, minor shelfwear to bottom edge; jacket has a small tear at top rear hinge, tiny chunk missing at bottom front hinge]. A story of love, murder and suicide, described by one critic as "atmospheric to the verge of mystical." The novel concerns a woman named Felicia Lissell, who travels to Rhodesia with her aunt, to visit the farm of Dick Cardross, but she doesn't suspect that "dangerous social complications awaited her in the gay English colony nearby." It seems that "Stella Cardross, her hostess, was a tiger woman who had long since been unfaithful to her husband in the purple of mad African nights. She considered both Paget Vyner and Patrick Fenn, co-owners of the Tagati mine, to be her own particular property, and brooked no disturbance of her admiring retinue. Felicia, however, was young and unspoiled, with a beauty… Read More

Near Fine in Near Fine dj. Later Printing. Hardcover. [nice copy, minimal shelfwear to book; jacket lightly soiled on rear panel, with a touch of wear to the spine extremities]. (B&W photographs) Eddie Cantor's autobiography, in which "he retraces the steps that have carried him from a dingy one-room apartment on New York's lower East Side through a thousand stage doors and out into the glow of the footlights and the applause and laughter that have so long been his due. [The book] is filled with anecdotes and stories about Eddie, his wonderful wife Ida, and their five-girl family, as well as Eddie's friends, the now fabled names of show business: George Jessel, Al Jolson, Irving Berlin, Sophie Tucker, George M. Cohan, Ruth Etting, Will Rogers, Ethel Merman, Jack Benny, and many others." A very nice copy of a book that is notoriously prone to wear. .

London: Calder and Boyars. Very Good in Very Good+ dj. 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. [appears to be an ex-ship's library book, with only a single stamp on the front pastedown marking it as such (the stamp is of The Cunard Steamship Company Limited); there is some staining on the bottom edge and fore-edge, the latter bleeding a bit into the pages for about the first half of the book, but otherwise relatively little wear; the jacket is a bit rippled, with some horizontal creasing along the top and bottom of the front panel, but all in all pretty decent-looking, having been long protected by a (new removed) library jacket cover]. Maltz's final published novel, about a group of escapees from Auschwitz during the last days of World War II. "The horrors of their situation are pitilessly invoked -- not only the dangers of pursuit and discovery, of betrayal, but also of starvation, the terrible cold, the loss of morale." [spine slightly turned, small stain on top edge, some discoloration to pastedowns and endpapers; jacket is heavily edgeworn, little bits of paper loss at spine ends and several corners, shallow chip at upper left-hand corner of front panel]. A psychoanalytical murder mystery, in which the accused murderess doesn't actually know if she's guilty or not. Although she testifies to her innocence in court and is acquitted, every night "she dreamed an altogether different story of what had happened, until at last she did not know which version was true and whether the truth might not be still another story." She consults a psychiatrist, Dr. Hillis Owen, who attempts to penetrate "the shadows of [her] twisted mind" and figure it all out. INSCRIBED and SIGNED in large red-ink letters by the author on the front pastedown. "The cowboy novel to end all cowboy novels," in the author's words, a "non-historical comedy," about a couple of fellows competing to win the hand of the nymphomaniacal daughter of a Mexican rancher. (A curse has been put on the ranch, you see, which is why she's nymphomaniacal in the first place, and the only way her father can lift the curse is to marry her off.) Adapted into the 1969 film of the same name, starring that well-known comedy duo Richard Widmark and Chaim Topol, with Condon himself doing the screenplay. [covers are edgeworn, the spine has been covered/reinforced by a strip of clear tape, and the previous owner's name plus date & place of purchase is written in ink at the top of the title page]. (pen and ink drawings) Very uncommon anthology of horror stories -- short-short stories, in fact, since each is just a single page in length (printed in two-column format, evocative of pulp-magazine formatting). There are 49 stories in this 54-page book, a paperback original which measures 6" x 9" (hence a Pocket Book "Special," larger than that publisher's typical mass-market product), interspersed with occasional full-page illustrations. The author (1925-2011) was quite prolific, not only in output but in pseudonymitry (if that's a word): according to encyclopedia-dot-com, he also wrote under the noms de plume J.D. Hardin, Zachary Hawkes, T.G. Horne, Jake Logan,… Read More

Mass Market PB "Stories of the men who made the legends, the tough, daring, unbeatable men who drove the bullion-laden coahes on the outlaw-ridden trails." A tie-in with the NBC-TV series, which aired for five seasons (1957-1962); its star, Dale Robertson, is pictured in a small photo on the rear cover. The eight stories in this book were all adapted from episodes in the series' first two seasons, half of them teleplayed by series co-creator Frank Gruber; several of the others were based on episodes written by Steve Fisher, based on Gruber's original stories.
