At the beginning of the Indian removal era, Albert Gallatin convinced the U.S. government to fund an investigation into the languages of the Native Americans being displaced. His motivation for systematizing Native languages stemmed largely from a long fascination with phililogy, encouragement by Humboldt, and correspondence with DuPonceau and others on the subject; from the government's perspective, bringing "civilization" to Native tribes first required proof of their intelligence. Working through the War Department, Gallatin secured $2000 in funding for the project and promptly had Secretary of War James Barbour issue a circular to Indian agents. An extremely rare German edition of Father Louis Hennepin's landmark map of North America, from his Description de la Louisiane..., based upon the explorations of Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette. This version of the map was issued with the 1689 Nuremberg edition of Hennepin's work, and the cartouche translated from French into Latin. As in the original, the German map shows the significant new details of the upper headwaters of the Mississippi. By removing the extraneous European continent, the German map focuses solely on North America and even tends to magnify the Great Lakes region. This map drew directly on the explorations of the French fur trader Jolliet and the Jesuit Marquette. A beautiful incunable map of Spain and Portugal from the 1482 Ulm edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia." This map is from the first atlas to be printed north of the Alps and the first with woodcut maps. Here with fine period coloring, including lapis lazuli blue seas, not the ochre color of later editions. This rare incunable map is one of the earliest to picture modern Spain and Portugal. It is from the 1482 Ulm edition of Ptolemy's Geographia, printed by Lienhart Holle and titled Cosmographia, in which Donnus Nicolaus Germanus adapted Ptolemy's second century cartography and added five modern maps, including this one of the Iberian Peninsula. Highly decorative Dutch derivative of De l'Isle's monumental 1703 mapping: this copy a dark impression with beautiful full period colour. Despite the title, this map covers a large portion of North America, from the Great Lakes in the north, through Texas and Mexico to Panama in the south, with Delisle's excellent depiction of the Mississippi River Valley. The Southwest shows missions and native villages, including Acoma, as well as Taos, Santa Fe, and Casas Grandes. The region that became Texas was then under French rule and part of "Florida" (later changed to "Louisiana"). Its southern border is the Rio Norte (Rio Grande) which winds back towards Taos. In East Texas, the Indian villages are designated where the Spanish constructed missions and presidios. Devoid of setting, except for a line for the road, the speed of the coach and the actions of the horses pulling it are accentuated by the lack of unnecessary fuss or detail. Also occasionally referred to as the "medicine man", Tai-O-Mah or Taimah, "Thunder" or "He Who Shakes the Rocks" (c. 1790 - 1830) was an esteemed Fox warrior and chief who maintained an amicable relationship with the United States throughout his life. In 1824, he traveled to Washington as a member of the Sac and Fox delegation, led by General William Clark, which signed a treaty ceding their lands in northern Missouri and the southeastern part of Iowa to the federal government. The second part of this work is a royal edict concerning the lowering of tariffs on goods and foods. Each work with an individual titlepage as well as the collective titlepage at the beginning. Second edition, published the same year as the first, of this famous political pamphlet by lexicographer Samuel Johnson. This edition includes a number of textual changes from the first, and is also easily distinguished from the first by differing press marks. Written in response to the opening rumblings of the American Revolution, Johnson's acerbic pamphlet was published at the height of his popularity and fame. A Descriptive Account of Hardy Coniferous Trees' Ravenscroft's work is the third (in order of publication) of the three great coniferous iconographies of the nineteenth century, following Bedford and Lambert. The very fine plates fall into two categories: botanical studies of details of the needles and fruit of the individual trees, and landscape studies of examples of individual trees in their natural habitat. This plate is an outstanding example of the latter group, here by and after William Richardson. Cf. Nissen BBI 1588; cf. Great Flower Books (1990) p.127; cf. Stafleu & Cowan 8685.

A very fine signed print from the one of the greatest bird artists of the 20th century. An exquisite image of a flock of teal coming in to land in the wetlands on a mid-winter's afternoon. Sir Peter Scott was best known in later life for his work as a founding member and chairman of the World Wildlife Fund, but in "the period before and after the war, Peter Scott became undoubtedly the most popular artist in the United Kingdom" (J. A striking majestic mezzotint of Tee Yee Neen Ho Ga Row, member of the Mohawk council and one of ‘The Four Kings' The present portrait depicts perhaps the most important of the four First Nations dignitaries known as 'The Four Kings' who travelled to London in 1710. In honor of their visit to the Court of St. James, Queen Anne commissioned Dutch artist John Verelst to paint their portraits, and the images were soon in circulation in the form of the present mezzotint by John Simon. A fine example from the deluxe issue of David Roberts' monumental works on the Middle East: 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia', considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. Roberts' masterpiece was issued in 41 parts over seven years in three states; tinted, tinted proof and in its finest form (as with the present image), coloured and mounted on card. It is beautifully lithographed by Louis Haghe, to whom Roberts paid tribute in glowing terms, `Haghe has not only surpassed himself, but all that has hitherto been done of a similar nature. He has rendered the views in a style clear, simple and unlaboured, with a masterly vigour and boldness which none but a painter like him could have transferred to stone'. A fine image from "one of the grandest publications of the scientific explorations in the American West", by arguably one of the greatest American topographical artists who recorded this important era of westward expansion. This magnificent image is from the atlas volume of the official government report of the first great geological survey of the Grand Canyon. The team assembled to carry out the survey included some outstanding talents: Clarence E.Dutton, the scientist; Jack Hilliers, the photographer, and William Henry Holmes and Thomas Moran as artist-topographers. Holmes had already taken part in the Hayden survey of 1872-1877, and after serving with the Geological survey from 1880-1884, he turned to Ethnology and Anthropology, becoming chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology in 1902.
