Description:
Autograph letter signed by the English physician and poet. Undated but circa 1880s. Addressed to "Dear Mr. Cotton" [editor of The Academy magazine of London.] Hake writes to submit a sonnet for publication. Signed "T.G. Hake." Good overall with mailing folds, creasing, and an old ring mark. On thick, laid paper. 4.5 x 7 inches. Hake's early prose epic Vales (aka Valdarno) was admired by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, founder and central figure of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A close friendship developed, and Hake became a member of Rosetti's artistic circle. He was later companion and physician to Rossetti during his declining years. (Note: The sonnet Hake references in this letter may have been Venus Urania. It was published in The Academy April 19, 1884.)

Boston: Little, Brown and Co., (1961.) 1st edition. In a custom fine leather binding. A sports mystery story by Matt Christopher (1917-1997), prolific author of books and stories for young readers. In this novel, a boy sets out to crack the case of who is stealing from his locker during basketball practice. 128 pages. Illustrated. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. Handsomely bound in dark blue leather (spine and corners) and blue linen. Gilt lettering and decoration. Gilt top page edge. VG with modest wear and signs of age, Some spotting of the page edges, but text clean and unmarked. An unusually nice binding for a book of this type.
