China c. 9-23 A.D. A Chinese spade coin, 5.5 cm. tall by ca. 2.5 cm. wide, with four Chinese characaters on the front, a round hole at the top center, verso blank, with usual center line, very good, old patina, characters crisp, sharp image. Early examples of ritualistic Chinese "spade" or Pu coin. This is an excellent and well preserved casted coin, done in the traditional shape, with four characters: "TA PU HUANG CH'IEN" in seal script, read croswise, large coin Pu worth 1000. Huang is said to be used for Heng. This coin & its in- scription is pictured in the very rare, reliable & scholarly work by J.S. FIRST & ONLY EDITION The lithograph shows the notorious anti-Chinese orator, Dennis Kearney, behind the bars in the House of Correction, with six Chinese taunting him, most of the Chinese carrying symbols of common Chinese employments in the San Francisco of the day: one carries cigars (and smokes one), one carries a washboard and holds up a sock with a hole in its heel, one sits on a basket of [?], one stands in front of a basket of fish, holding two crabs in one hand, and a fish pierced by stick in the other, the fish labelled "Black Friday." All the Chinese wear queues. The last sentence of the title refers to Kearney's battle cry, "The Chinese Must Go!" .
