The image is a fine full-tone photogravure from CAMERA WORK 3, 1903. Clarence H. White (1871 - 1925) was born in West Carlisle, Ohio and moved to Newark, Ohio in 1887. An early interest in art was thwarted by his parents. Employed by a wholesale grocery firm, he began making photographs after a visit to the Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893. In 1898, he exhibited ten photographs at the First Philadelphia Photographic Salon, which brought him to the attention of Alfred Stieglitz and other Pictorialists. Oblong folio, frontis portrait, 48 hand-printed photogravure plates with text leaf opposite, no title page, t.e.g. Scattered foxing to the blank margins of several of the plates, and some have short tears or abrasions in the blank margins with one plate partially loose; many of the text leaves are foxed and stained. Half morocco and cloth; the gilt title on the front cover and the upper tips are rubbed and the marbled rear endpapers have two moderate scars where they stuck together; the rear cover shows dampstaining with the cloth lifting at one corner. In all, a good copy. Davies, a prolific writer of guide books to East Anglia, illustrated this work from his own photographs, which were printed in the photogravure process by T. & R. Annan. An amateur photographer, born at St Cyrus, Kincardineshire, in 1827; he earned his M.D. degree in 1848, and took up photography in 1853. He first used the calotype and waxed-paper processes of W.H. Fox Talbot and Gustave Le Gray. Though the wet collodion glass negative process was developed and well established by 1853, Keith preferred the paper negative process for its advantages in landscape work. Notes by C. S. Minto.

Each photograph measures 9 5/8 in. (24.4 cm.) width x 7 11/16 in. (19.5 cm.) height. Each has a printed paper label from the Ministry of Information affixed to the blank verso; beneath it is stamped "Cecil Beaton Photograph." Slight silvering to each at the bottom right corner; one print is slightly soiled on the blank verso; else near fine. The captions read: "2. INDIAN EDUCATION. Next comes the village school where in addition to the 'three R's' handicrafts are taught." "4. INDIAN EDUCATION. A young girl having an English lesson." "10. INDIAN EDUCATION. Osmania University students listening to a lecture on mathematics..." Sir Cecil Walter Hardy Beaton (1904-1980) was an English fashion, portrait and war photographer, diarist, painter, interior designer and an Academy Award-winning stage and costume designer for films and the theater. During WW II, he was sent to India and China by the Ministry of Information to take photographs, of which only a few of the approximately 7000 were ever published.

A fine copy, with just the slightest signs of use. Award-winning Swedish photographer, Christer Strömholm, was born in 1918 in Stockholm; he was a major force in Swedish photography. As the director of Fotoskolan in Stockholm, he trained over 1200 students; many who became leading Scandinavian photographers. He died in 2002 after a prolonged illness. The title translates: To the Memory of Myself. This is his first monograph. Text in Swedish.
