This copy exhibits the reading 'agi-' at the end of line 11 on B2r indicative of the form with some of the errata corrected, and 3E2 blank, rather than bearing errata. Lancelot Andrewes was an English clergyman and scholar, who held high positions in the Church of England during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He was in turn Bishop of Chichester, Ely and Winchester, and oversaw the translation of the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible. His Tortura Torti - a learned work which grew out of the Gunpowder Plot controversy - was written in answer to Roberto Bellarmino's Matthaeus Tortus which had criticized James I's oath of allegiance. Leipzig, Bernhard Tauchnitz1860. 2 volumes. A commercial undertaking as evidenced by the poor paper quality and sloppy pasting and cutting of photos. Nevertheless, an interesting example of a "grangerized" work when extra illustrations were added by Grand Tour Victorian tourists, a market clearly courted by Tauchnitz European Editions of the classics. Bookplates; some peeling and partial loss to spines, inner hinges crudely repaired.

In 1820 on returning from the United States, where he had fled fearing arrest for his arguably seditious writings, Cobbett established a plant nursery at Kensington, where he trialed a dwarf strain of maize he found growing in a French cottage garden which grew well in England's shorter summer. To help sell this variety, Cobbett published Treatise on Cobbett's Corn. Charmingly written, including anecdotes of his travels through America, and the farming techniques and people he encounters there. The Naval and Military Magazine (1827, Vol. I) reviewed the work, commenting: "However elaborate the diagrams, practical proofs must always be preferred on professional points; and, though the baronet is backed by Euclid, and assures his readers he is supported in his theory by the opinions of experienced officers, it is not too much here to assert, that the majority of both the new and old school will dispute the utility of staysails, in any shape, set upon a wind; and few, it is presumed, will approve of the cut of Sir Henry's jib."
