Salisbury, Conn.: The Cantina Press, 1938. 16mo.  140 x 105 mm., [5 ½ x 4 ¼ inches].  72 pp., printed on tissue.  Unadorned orange paper wrappers; 2 preliminary leaves and last leaf with some discoloration of the paper stock, otherwise very good. Beautifully and creatively printed catalogue by the Cantina Press containing 28 first editions by the Anglo-American writer, T. S. Eliot.  "The books (which are all fine copies and are accurately described) punctuate the several periods of the author's career."  Because of the texture of the tissue, each leaf is printed on one side only, and as one works through the catalogue the previous page shows through in reverse, giving the catalogue a particularly modern touch.  (781).

Broadside, 14" x 8," double column, signed in type by three selectmen with attestation by town clerk at end. Folded in quarters with several tiny holes (no loss), a number of creases, minor stains, one short marginal tear, etc., but overall quite sound.
Comprised of 19 Articles proscribing certain types of behavior, the unique broadside specifies fines or other punishments for lawbreakers. Most interesting is Article 4: "No boy or other person shall be allowed to play at the game of bat and ball in the public streets of the village. Any person offending against this article shall forfeit and pay fifty cents for each offence."
In addition to the obvious (like public drunkenness) these include: riding horses at a gallop in town (or more than a walk on the covered bridge); "any boy, or other person" who hangs onto a sleigh or carriage; anyone "causing dogs or any other animals to fight" in the streets; "Any person wantonly exposing himself [sic] naked in sight of any dwelling house"; a person injuring an… Read More

Broadside sheet, large folio.  775 x 590 mm., [30 ½ x 23 inches].  Engraved with calligraphic samples, with five engraved vignettes.  Printed on thick wove paper, deckle edge.  Fine condition. A splendid and rare type specimen sheet, beautiful printed and fortunately beautifully preserved.  The imprint states that it was 'composed, engraved, and published by J. B. Seitz'.  Seitz was an engraver for the Royal Bavarian Bureau of Statistics and Topography (Königlichen Bayrischen Statitisch-Topographischen Bureau), which was responsible for the manufacture of official maps, charts, and plans.  He was one of the first technicians to work on the trial production of lithographic maps and considered a leader in the field of cartographic design and printing. Bound in contemporary black pebble morocco, three simple fillet borders in gilt, decorated spine; joints and tips lightly rubbed and paper at hinge of front board of volume one is split. Preliminary leaves lightly foxed and sporadic foxing in text, some tissues guards brown, but the text and images are generally crisp and clean. Ownership inscription of Hannah B. Oblong 4to.  230 x 275 mm., [9 x 11 inches].  12 leaves, (ten color printed plates plus front and rear wrappers).  Printed on card stock the corners and edges of which are chipped with minor loss to the margins; the stapled cover wrappers  nearly loose, the paper stock is sound and clean but fragile at edges. Appears to be the only edition of this title, with reappearances of the Mulligan Guards and their Black counterparts in other publications by McLoughlin.  These comic images are set to music and lyrics by Wm. A. Pond & Co. and they reflect the stereotypes of Irish immigrants and the Freed Black as fodder for the escapades of the "Mulligan Guard."  Oblong folio.  Leaf size, 435 c 300 mm., [17 x 12 inches]; Plate size, 250 x 160 mm., [9 ¾ x 6 ¼ inches].  Ten soft ground etchings and aquatints; some minor foxing to the margins.  With the original printed wrappers, title printed around an engraving of a bucolic setting with cypress trees, a lake, cottage and sailboat.  The wrapper has some expert paper repairs to corners and fold at the spine, Rare series of engraved plates by a British female artist and a French etcher of considerable reputation.  The plates were printed to celebrate the visit of Her Majesty Queen Dowager Adelaide (1792-1849) to the Island of Madeira off the coast of Portugal in 1846.  The images were from original drawings by Carolina Courtenay Boyle (1803-1883), a noted painter and draughtswoman, who accompanied Adelaide on her final tour before her death in 1849 and made sketches of the scenes through which they passed.  Courtenay Boyle was the 'maid of honour' to Queen Adelaide and loyal traveling companion.  In… Read More

Tirabosco, and an engraved initial letter. Original marbled paper paste paper boards. First edition. An unusual and not doubt rare poem dedicated to Pietro Manin, who was at the end of his tenure as governor of the city and province of Padua. Alvise Vallaresso was the author a number of short eulogies and poetic fete books, which he wrote exclusively for luminaries of city of Padua. The engravings are done by a local artist and although a little primitive in style are nicely rendered. Not cited in NUC or OCLC, 4 copies cited in ICCU. Not in Morazzoni.

Brown publisher's cloth decorated in blind; spine faded; very good sound copy. First edition. William G. Stevenson was a physician from Troy N. Y. and studied at Bellevue Medical College in New York City. He was a correspondent for the Memphis Avalanche covering the war in the South. Jacket with rubbing at the edges, head and tail of spine with minor tears, a bit fading to the color of the jacket, otherwise very good copy. First edition.  Di Donato's third novel, published ten years after his highly acclaimed book, Christ in Concrete.   In this three Circles of Light Di Donato revisits his childhood and his awakening as a young man, both in terms of his sexuality and growing responsibilities to his mother and family.  Of the novel Ben Hecht wrote, Three Circles of Light is a beautiful book.  Life seems worth living after its reading.

Following the August, 1831, Nat Turner rebellion in Southampton County, a last effort was made by moderate Virginians to gradually abolish slavery. First in French, originally published in Milan in 1748 in two quarto volumes under the title Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventù italiana,.  It is considered the first book on differential and integral calculus written by either a man or a woman and its publication brought Agnesi international recognition.  Although the title suggests that the book was written for the "use of Italian youth" it was a highly sophisticated and detailed presentation including algebraic equations, and thermos of finite and infinitesimal quantities.  The six plates illustrate her ideas.  This French edition was translated by P. Edmonds and depicts a setting of a happy couple before a fire.  The text of the pamphlet includes an annual report, the results of a lottery of 51 works of including artwork by Thomas Cole, John Audubon, J.
