Description:
Jonathan Swift (1667 – 1745) was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, poet, cleric and Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. His most famous works are Gulliver's Travels, A Modest Proposal and A Tale of a Tub. He is still regarded as the foremost prose satirist in the English language and his deadpan style caused the term 'Swiftian' to be embedded in the English language.
A Tale of a Tub, 'Written for the Universal Improvement of Mankind', was Swift's first major work and his most difficult and masterly satire. It is a prose parody divided into sections, each delving into the morals and ethics of the English. Composed between 1694 and1697, it was published in 1704. It was attacked as being as a satire on religion. Leading the attack was the theologian William Wotton.
The title page of this copy states that it was published by Herbert B Turner & Co, Boston, 1902.
Confusingly, this copy contains 'explanatory notes' by none other than William Wotton.
It is 4 ¼" x 6 ¼", burgundy boards with a leaf… Read More

Description:
This is a first edition of The Tibetans, by the Canadian photographer and academic Art Perry.
It is a moving collection of photographs of a culture under siege. More than 150 black and white photographs record every aspect of Tibetan life, from monks meditating surrounded by candles made of Yak wax to peasant people to landscapes.Kirkus Review: "Perry's black-and-white photographs of the Tibetan people have an instinctive freshness that casually takes in an expression or a mood, and his shots around and about the city of Lhasa are as intimate as a walking tour (the view from a balcony on the Potala is so far beyond magnificent it is comical). His landscape images have a formal, composed quality near overwhelmed by the prodigious sweeps, where the wind hurries over the ground, snapping at prayer flags. The text, on the other hand, is appalling. It swings between the exquisitely meaningless (``a distant land that points to a time of lost innocence'') to a spit-flecked, bilious rant against… Read More

These are shelf-mates, part of the series of classics published by Collins Clear-Type Press c 1920. I can't find other copies of them for sale anywhere else.
Both are 4 ¼"x 6 ¼", both are brown-red cloth.
Both have book plates that can be steamed off. Shelf wear is minor.
They need cleaning; they don't have any stains, but they have a sort of accumulation of specks on them—someone needs to give them a good brushing.
Toilers of the Sea was published in 1866. It is dedicated to the island of Guernsey, where Hugo spent 15 years in exile. Hugo uses the setting of a small island community to transmute seemingly mundane events into drama of the highest calibre; it is set just after the Napoleonic Wars and deals with the impact of the Industrial Revolution upon the island.

One full-page black and white image.
From the endpapers to page 15, there are creases, plus an ink mark. Spine is very tight.

Description:
This is a perfect copy of The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, the Henry Fielding classic published in 1749. It is still considered as one of the world's greatest novels. This is the Wesleyan University edition, which is acknowledged as the best available, as it is an unmodernized text which presents the story in as close as is possible to Fielding's own final revision. It includes a chronology of Fielding's life and the 'Geography of Tom Jones' map (in color).
It is heavily illustrated, in color and black and white, by the American illustrator Warren Chappell, who created the illustrations in 1943. The editors' text was first released in 1975; it was all brought together in 1982; this is a first edition of that printing.
It is a thick, heavy book--1000 pages, including 2 maps, 18 color illustrations and 21 black and white illustrations. It has cream tweed covers, a bound-in burgundy silk bookmark and comes in a reinforced and illustrated brown slipcase.

The is a first edition from the classics series published by International Collectors Library in 1970. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, is a comic novel, considered to be one of the finest novels in the English language. Written in 1749 by the English writer Henry Fielding (1707-1754), it is constructed around a romance plot. Squire Allworthy suspects that the infant he adopts is the illegitimate child of his servant. As Tom grows up, he falls in love with the unattainable virtuous neighbor, Sophia. Numerous obstacles have to be overcome before he can win her hand. In the course of this, various sets of characters pursue each other from one part of the country to another, giving Fielding an opportunity to paint an incomparably vivid picture of England in the mid-18th century. It has been adapted many times, most notably for the Oscar-winning 1963 film starting Albert Finney and Susannah York.

Description:
This is a first edition (UK, not US) of Tommy: The British Soldier on the Western Front 1914-1918. It is superb and important book that tells the story of an epic and terrible war through the letters, diaries and memories of those who fought it. Of the six million men who served in the British army, nearly one million lost their lives and over two million were wounded. This is the story of these men – epitomized by the character of Sgt Tommy Atkins. Using previously unseen letters, diaries, memoirs and poetry from the years 1914-1918, Richard Holmes paints a moving picture of the generation that fought and died in the mud of Flanders. He follows men whose mental health was forever destroyed by shell shock, women who lost husbands and brothers in the same afternoon and those who wrote at lunchtime and died before tea. Groundbreaking and critically-acclaimed, this book tells the real story of trench warfare, the strength and fallibility of the human spirit, the individuals behind an epic event, and… Read More
