Schjeldahl writes re: Kurtulus, and asks if his name 'really' means "A Happy Branch" in Turkish and if so, could Ayden describe the Turkish word, that is what part means happy, and what part means branch. Signed in violet ink, creaslined with several spots and bit of rumbled corner.

New York, 1923. First Edition. Letter. Very good. Farrar writes with apologies to Miss Freeman for answering late. He states 'The lady who I think wrote "The Critical Fable" is Miss Amy Lowell.' He goes on to say that he has no proof of this nor has he ever been able to get a definite statement from her. Freeman was known for innovation in library services, and one was of the most famous and well known librarians of the early 20th century.

Cambridge, 1943. Letter. Very good. The American Defense, Harvard Group was organized by a small group of Harvard faculty members to alert Americans to the dangers posed by the Axis powers after the fall of France in June, 1940 and to marshal aid to American allies in Europe and Asia. After Pearl Harbor, the Group helped mobilize support for America's war effort. At its peak, its membership reached more than 1700. Perry writes, " I have no way of carrying out your suggestion regarding Stalin and Bulgaria. Perhaps the matter was talked over at the recent Moscow Conference..."

Extensively illustrated with college and photos, some graphic.

Los Angeles: The Uplifters Club , ca 1920. Card. Very good. The Lofty and Exalted Order of Uplifters or simply The Uplifters was an invitation-only social club at the Los Angeles Athletic Club originally founded by Harry Marston Haldeman and L. Frank Baum in 1913. Upon Haldeman's arrival in Los Angeles, he sought to create a mens club similar to The Bugs. Membership included Marco H. Hellman, Sim W. Crabill, Ralph Hamlin, Ernest R. Ball, Byron Gay, Will Rogers, Walt Disney, Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, Busby Berkeley, Leo Carrillo, Harold Lloyd, Darryl F. Zanuck, Ferde Grofé, Eugene Biscailuz, Hays Rice, Clarence R. Rundel, Louis F. Gottschalk, and L. Frank Baum. Baum created the group's name, wrote its anthem, "Haldeman," and scripted most of their amateur theatricals until his death. The majority of the Uplifters were successful businessmen; local actors and artists contributed their talents instead of paying dues. L. GIllis was the founder of the United States Naval Observatory. J. K. Paulding, writer and Secretary of the Navy letter included, not in BAL. Removed/disbound. Has not been located in Worldcat at this time.
