Description:
The original, signed painting by Thorpe for the dust jacket of the trade edition – painting is framed and matted (black frame measures approximately 16 x 12 inches). This art had to be redone at the last possible moment because an editor at Harper decided that the jacket design must include a scene from Washington D.C. The mystery leads Leaphorn and Chee to leave the reservation and investigate in Washington – an unusual twist in the Hillerman mysteries, since the action seldom shifts far from the Navajo Reservation. The plot twist is what led to the decision to redo the jacket art. This painting is the original art, which appeared only on the Advanced Reading Copy of the book, and related early publisher's promotions for the title. There were also a number of proofs of the original jacket.

Condition varies from Very Good to Near Fine depending upon degree of age toning present. All ten are housed in a Fine, green vinyl "Objectivist" binder. The titles by Rand are: Textbook of Americanism; Notes on the History of American Free Enterprise; Faith and Force: The Destroyers of the Modern World; Conservatism: An Obituary; Americas' Persecuted Minority: Big Business; The Objectivist Ethics; The Intellectual Bankruptcy of Our Age; and The Fascist New Frontier. Title by Greenspan is Antitrust and that by Reisman is The Revolt Against Affluence: Galbraith's Neo-Feudalism. The two pamphlets that were published by the Institute have had reference to it lined out and have been stamped to indicate publication by The Objectivist.

Very Good to Near Fine book with the ubiquitous page browning, several gathering have aged more than the rest, soft at spine ends, very tiny bump bottom edge back board, touch of age toning along top and bottom edges of boards; in a Very Good jacket that has age toning along edges of lighter portions of jacket, light edge and corner wear with a couple of tiny chips top of spine, small dog-ear crease bottom corner front flap, light rubbing both panels and several light overwrite impressions. This copy has no remainder mark and is a nice example of this book, which has generally aged badly over the years. McMurtry's sixth novel was made into a popular 1983 movie with Shirley MacLaine, Jack Nicholson, Debra Winger, and several other well-known stars. The movie was nominated for 11 and won 5 Academy Awards; including Best Picture, Best Actress for Shirley MacLaine, and Best Supporting Actor for Jack Nicholson.
