Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Original 1927 broadside produced by Imp. H. Chacoin, Paris, advertising a Dadaesque "Utter Poverty" costume ball at the Theatre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. The event attracted a considerable amount of curiosity, though criticism on the provocation towards underprivileged populations eventually resulted in the show's cancellation.  15.5 x 23.15 inches (39.4 x 58.7 cm). Not examined out of frame but in apparently fine condition.  Archivally matted, framed and glazed. Ref: Spectacle, 192; Color Plate, p. 288; PAI-XLIII (2014), 524.Guy and Jean Selz were active in the Montparnasse art world as collectors, critics and writers. Together with Vladimir Pollisadiv (a Ukranian artist who was dating Marie Vassilief at the time), they organized a ball based on the concept of "Utter Poverty."  The program of events called for "lice and bugs," along with other elements of squalor and filth, fox-trotting (that's what the lice-ridden do) to four jazz bands until 5 a.m., a… Read More

Description:
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Three small original notebooks of typed and handwritten song lyrics, created and used in recital by the great Italian tenor. The small ring-bound notebooks contain lyrics in Italian, French, English and German to arias, lieder and art songs performed by Gigli, typewritten and arranged in order of performance. The lyrics to the English and German songs are rendered phonetically with Italian spellings, leading to such amusing spellings as "Sooftli gos mai songs entriti thru dhe nait tu dhi / In dhe sailent wuuds ai weit dhi / Com mai loof tu mi." ("Softly goes my song's entreaty through the night to thee / In the silent woods I wait thee / Come my love to me." A few handwritten corrections are made to the typed lyrics throughout; one song (Serenata Triste) written by hand in pencil. Two of the notebooks contain set lists at the beginning of the notebook, with the songs in the relevant order afterwards. Black leather and faux leather covers. Toning, some pages with tape… Read More

Each drawing signed at the foot by Walkowitz. Toned edges, a few short creases and tears. Each 10.5 x 7.75 inches (27 x 17.5 cm).Walkowitz first met Duncan, who had captured the attention of the avant-garde with her innovative dance, at the studio of Auguste Rodin in 1906. Walkowitz was captivated by Duncan's spontaneous and free language of movement, and over time made thousands of drawings of her dancing form, even after her death in 1927. Walkowitz said later of Duncan: "...she was a Muse. She had no laws. She didn't dance according to the rules. She created. Her body was music..."

Hand stamp "Besozzi" to title (confirming that the publisher's name is misprinted). Some foxing, gutter damp stained, ink stain to title; else in very good condition.A collection of virtuosic studies, dedicated to Giovanni Battista Viotti, for solo violin with increasing degree of difficulty; the final "caprice" is a fugue. The composer was born in Spain (as Felipe Libon), studied with Viotti in London and held positions in Portugal and Spain before he settled in Paris in 1800. The publisher styles himself "1ere Flûte de la Chapelle du Roi et du Théâtre Royal de l'Opéra Comique," which allows to identify him as Henri Besozzi (1775-after 1814), son of the much better known Gaetano Besozzi (1725/27-1798). The Besozzis were a large family of musicians of Italian origin. Little is known about Henri Besozzi and even less about his publishing business.
