Description:
London: Cassell, 1963. 260 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w frontispiece. "Robert Graves and Basil Liddell Hart wrote the only two authorized biographies of T.E. Lawrence during his lifetime. Both knew the man well and at the time of his death on May 11th, 1935, their association with him had grown into understanding based on sympathetic knowledge and respect Yet the two had never met; Lawrence kept his friendships sealed off from one another as far as he was able. While engaged on their biographies, both wrote frequent letters asking him for elucidation of particular events and sent typescripts for his comments and corrections. Liddell Hart met him frequently for informal talks. After Lawrence's death, both made selections from the material in their possession which they thought best illustrated his character and qualities, and in 1939 published them in two companion volumes as a limited edition. Now, twenty-four years later, it is possible to republish these selections in a single… Read More

Description:
Boston: Tuttle, 2003. 196 pp, 8" H. "This is the most complete reader's guide available on Japan's highly revered novel, the eleventh-century classic, 'The Tale of Genji', by Murasaki Shikibu. Written specifically to accompany the translation of the work by Arthur Waley and Edward G. Seidensticker (not included here), the guide offers detailed summaries and thematic commentaries, as well as cross-referenced notes on the novel's many characters. It also charts the essential progress of (the book) and introduces the reader to the more subtle complexities, literary devices, and conventions of Lady Murasaki's Heian Japan. The author presents brief, illustrated essays on historical, philosophical, and cultural features of the novel, and discusses such relevant aspects as the balance between the tenets of Shintoism and Buddhism, the pervasive concepts of 'karma' in human relationships, and the poetic aspects of 'aware'." Description:
London: B. Mitchell / Orbis, 1985. 191 pp, 11 1/4" H. Translated from the Czech. Colour and b&w illustrations throughout. "These marvellous tales come from the faraway Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as from Finland. They are full of earthy humour as well as heroism and romance. They range from court to farmyard, from heaven to hell. the characters are unusually true to life, even unexpectedly so. God Himself is portrayed as being sometimes grumpy, sometimes angry, and very human. The Devil and his cohorts appear frequently, sometimes tricking men, more often being tricked by them. One intriguing aspect of these stories is the way so many of them lead on to another: just as you think you have reached the end, something new happens, and the protagonist is off again. These are among the most intriguing tales ever set down for children, because they do not end with simple morals or easy solutions. Each story creates a world of its own, one which you are… Read More

New York: Vantage Press, 1955. 75 pp, 81/8" H. B&w illustrations. "Here are exciting tales of Norway's giants and dwarfs, of the kind little nisse, the ugly troll, the horrible draug, the invisible huldre folke. From the beautiful Norseland's dim past and from recent adventures there, (the author) has collected an enchanting group of 'tall tales' to delight America's boys and girls. (She) has visited the old haunts of Norway's legendary 'little people'. She has seen the mysterious stone carvings and other actual physical evidence of strange, unexplained events of long ago in the land of the Norsemen. Some of these stories Mrs. Christianson heard as a child as she sat by her grandmother, who related the old tales to the accompaniement of her spinning wheel. Some she heard directly from the lips of present-day Norwegian farmers and fishermen." Minor edge wear, slight bump at bottom of rear hinge. Description:
London: Bodley Head, 1984. 310 pp, 9 5/8" H. B&w illustrations. "This collection of Indian folk tales was made by an Englishwoman who went to India with her husband in 1867 and lived there for twenty-two years. The stories, almost all taken from the oral versions of local storytellers, were compiled with a 'double intention' - to interest children and to provide material for those studying folklore - and her collection still fulfills both these aims admirably. The simple, lively tales are excellent for reading aloud and are of particular appeal for parents, teachers and librarians seeking stories for children accustomed to Eastern traditions." Interior - very small crease at top corner of pages 1 to 30 otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - two small corner creases, light soiling/browning to bottom of text block, small bump at bottom of front hinge, small crease at bottom edge of rear cover. . Reprint. Soft Cover. Description:
London: Grange, 1996. 214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs. "These echoes from the early days of tank warfare give an idea of the crucial role that tanks played in breaking the murderous stalemate on the Western Front. This influence was acknowledged by friend and foe alike and, while not decisive, it certainly hastened the end of that dreadful conflict, saving thousands of Allied lives and ushering in a new era of mechanised warfare. (The editor) draws his material exclusively from the archives of the world famous Tank Museum at Bovington Camp, Dorset. His linking narrative guides us through the war, battle by battle, from 15 September 1916 to the Armistice, using firsthand accounts of the tank actions, extracts from unit war diaries and other primary sources. Many of these accounts are previously unpublished or have had limited circulation, providing us with a fresh and vivid insight into the early days of tank warfare. A wealth of original photographs showing the tanks and… Read More

Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 1990. 354 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "In this vivid, dual-sided account Michael Slackman examines the circumstances behind the Japanese decision to attack Pearl Harbor and the Roosevelt administration's strategic thought. Central to the unfolding drama is the story of military-civilian relations in Hawaii. Slackman shows clearly how the suspicion and lack of understanding with which authorities viewed Hawaii's Japanese community caused the military command to focus on an imagined fifth column, unconsciously discounting the danger of an overseas attack by conventional military forces. His scrutiny of American efforts to locate and engage the Japanese fleet in the hours after the attack, and of the period of martial law that followed, are important contributions to our understanding of Pearl Harbor."
