Description:
New York: Wiley & Putnam, 1845. First Edition; first printing (BAL 16146). Bound with the front and back blanks, the half-title and the integral four pages of ads (but not with the additional 16 pages of advertisements) in dark burgundy morocco, decorated in gilt and blind; all edges gilt; raised bands and gilt decorations in compartments; titled in gilt “Poe’s Tales.” Later bookplate; the original owner’s name, J.A. Cassedy, is gilt stamped at the bottom of the front inner dentelle; his 1856 Ohio pencil owner’s inscription on the half-title confirms that this was bound in America not long after the book’s publication. Aside from some foxing and minor page stains, overall an excellent copy with wide and tall margins; in a custom clamshell box. The Bibliography of American Literature, a thorough, detailed and authoritative work, notes three printings of this book (although cautioning that the presumed second and third could prove to be states of a single printing), and notes that the…

Description:
Cleveland: World Publishing, 1943. “First Tower Books Edition.” (Tower was an imprint of World Publishing). Inscribed and signed in full by Karloff in 1944; pages yellowed, inevitably, otherwise very good in dust jacket. [With] an exceptional 2 1/2 page holograph letter on “Arsenic and Old Lace” letterhead. Dated May 20, 1943, Karloff writes the publisher, one Dr. Sheare, in New York. A long paragraph concerns the contents of this volume, insisting on the inclusion of some stories, but suggesting the dropping of a Dunsany tale (omitted in the published book). A second paragraph notes that the play is returning to Portland and Seattle (”Of course there is a charming interlude of ten days of one-nighters before we get to Portland which we will negotiate by means of oxcart, bus and wheelbarrow or whatever is handy...”), and that this obligation will delay the completion of his introduction. The original envelope, addressed by Karloff, with his name and address on the verso, as well as a…

Description:
New York: Gilley et al., 1829. First American Edition (? another American edition was issued the same year); the two volume English edition was published in 1828. Publisher’s muslin backed paper covered boards; worn; paper spine label mostly perished; notes on the rear endpapers; a good copy, but scarce, especially as originally issued. The editor is anonymous, and while Wolff questioned the reliability of the attribution, he added a “k” to Shoberl’s first name. So much for reliability.
