Activated in January 1942, the Eighth Air Force was established in England in February and flew its first symbolic mission on July the fourth. The first B-17 raid was in August; the first B-24s attacked in October. The next two years saw tremendous growth but also the realization that much of the theory-- that the bombers were so powerfully armed that they could fly unescorted, for example-- was wrong. The bombers carried the war to Germany but, as so many of the pictures in this book reveal, at tremendous loss of life among the young airmen who carried out the missions. Fine, new/dj fine. 101666.
