Bronx, New York: U.S. Naval Training School, 1946. Fine.. Photo-illustrated booklet promoting the U.S. Naval Training School, Women's Reserve, located in the Bronx in 1946. Includes a brief description of the training program, which includes lectures, physical education, drills and discipline, along with the following sections: "Replacing Men at Vital Tasks", with a description of newly available work to women during the War; "Notes to Seamen", with information on uniforms, regulations, etc.; "Subways to and From School", with directions to the school; and information on long-distance calls, local recreation, and more. Includes double-page spread with map of the area. 12mo (5.5" by 3.75"), pp. 24, stapled in original photo-illustrated wrappers. Printed in blue. April 1945-March 1946 monthly calendar on lower wrapper.

Brooklyn NY: Maltine Company, 1882. A 6" x 4 1/2" 16pp booklet with illustrated wraps. The cover depicts an American shield with crossed American and Red Cross flags. It is titled US Surgeons General United Sates Army. Series 1. It includes six (6) portraits of the surgeons general from 1815-1882. The portraits were copied by special permission form the original oil paintings in the possession of the Government. Each portrait is captioned with the name and dates of service. The narrative is promoting Maltine "extract of malt" , "Matine with Creosote and "Maltine with Wine of Pepsin". The booklet is speaking to physicians on the superiority of their product but may have been for the general public.

New York, New York: Wm. H. Murphy, 1850. Very good to fine. Upper wrapper and title-page loose; paper showing signs of brittleness.. The third installment of "Uncle Frank's Fables for Children", published by Wm. H. Murphy in six individually published (but continuously paginated) parts. This part tells the story of The Fir and the Bramble, followed by several other short moralistic tales. Most are illustrated, and all have a "Reflection" after that tells the story's moral or lesson. 12mo (6" by 4"), pp. [2], 69-102, with in-text illustrations, sewn in original illustrated yellow wrappers. Blue ink stamp of N.Y. State Library dated 1917 to upper wrapper; deaccession stamp to p. 69 dated 1951. N.Y. State Library.

New York: McLoughlin Brothers, 1870. 20 pp (including wrappers), blue cover with printed litho design depicting one of the stories found within, 'The Pet Hen.' Other stories included in this book are: 'The Star', 'The Cow', 'Dolly's Tea Party', 'The Little Girl Who Was Unkind to her Sister', 'Mary's Little Lamb', 'Robin Redbreast' and 'The selfish child.' Stories are written in verse. There are four full page color illustrations. A part of the 'Uncle Ned's Pictures Book' series. Measures 10 1/4" x 6 3/4" Some edge wear, particularly on the front cover's bottom left hand corner. There a stain on the front cover on the top left hand corner. Previous owner inscription on first page.

A collection of verses including Table Rules For Little Folks, The Dunce of a Kitten, The Noah's Ark, and Idle Ben. Lovely color plates that coordinate with verse. 10 1/2" x 7" slight wear on cover, some discoloration.

San Francisco, California: Drug Research Project, 1974. Very good. Light edge toning.. Featuring an image of Uncle Sam smoking a cigar and leaning on an oversized syringe, "Uncle Sam the Pusher Man" provides a frank look at narcotics addiction in America, putting the blame squarely on American capitalism and calling for the de-criminalization of drug use. Highlights the rise of methadone addiction after methadone was touted as a "cure" for heroin addiction, and how the government is complicit in the country's ongoing addiction. Includes several powerful political cartoons, such as one in which a Black man topples over a row of syringes to finally knock over American Capitalism, anthropomorphized as a pig with a large bag of money. New York: McLoughin Brothers, 1873. 24 pp (including wrappers) The title page states The Life of General Putnam'. "The book tells the embellished story of the life of General Israel Putnam, starting as a young boy who slaughters a wolf, and his time in service during the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. There are six full page colored illustrations, rich in detail and color. The author is Paul Pryor, who is under the pseudonym of American writer E.T. Taggard. A part of Uncle Sam's Big Picture Series. Measures 10 1/2" x 9" Cover is mostly fully detached. The binding is loose by intact, and one page is fully detached. Edge wear. Soiling and toning to interior pages. The last few pages have foxing.

Five Points NY: Donaldson Brothers. A 5" x 3 1/4" advertising trade card promoting Uncle Tom's Cabin Smokin Tobacco, manufactured by Wellman & Dwire, Quincy, Ill. Depicts characters from Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. Eva is holding a plug of tobacco while seated on Uncle Tom's shoulder. It is cpationed "O Uncle Tom! T'was Eva spoke, Why do you alwys this kind smoke? "O Missy, I hab understood Dat you must Lub Whebber's Good. And sartain sure Ob all de rest, Dis yer tobacco am de best'. Reverse promotes Hasbrouck & Mix, in Syracuse and other Wellman & Dwire Tobacco Company products. Light toning on reverse.

United States, 1890. Very good. Lightly toned. Ten trial to verso.. A late 19th-century reproduction of a photograph, with two actors portraying Uncle Tom and Little Eva from Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin". In the image, Uncle Tom gestures with his right hand towards heaven, as Eva looks on. They both hold a book (presumably a Bible). Printed on card, measuring approx. 6" by 4", verso blank. A nice example of how the popular novel permeated throughout all levels of material culture in the nineteenth century. These characters would have been instantly recognizable to people at the time.

Stamped cloth cover with applied color illustrated pictorial, color illustrations throughout by Lang Campbell, preprinted ex-libris with matching illustrated advertising end papers at back of book. Three short stories-Uncle Wiggly, Nurse Jane, and Uncle Butter spend the day at the beach; Uncle Wiggily visits the Hollow Stump School while bad Gator, Bob Cat, and Fox plan to catch him; Uncle Wiggily and Uncle Butter go golfing and escape the attempts of Bob Cat, Fox, and Wolf to catch them. 7 3/4" x 6 3/4" Wear and staining on cover, text block beginning to detach, inscribed, tears on some page edges.

1930. Two-sided advertising paper doll with three costumes and hats. The two-sided doll measures 4 1/2" tall. A dolly walking at her side. She has three costumes, one a jester, the second a party dress with a white wig and the third a party dress holding a hat with a jockey dress. The top of the page promotes the product NESTLE - Farine Lactee and Lait Sucre Suisse". The reverse promotes the product with advertising on each item. Vibrant color. In French. Measures 7 1/2" x 8" Light toning, otherwise fine.

Boston, Massachusetts: Forbes Lith. Co, 1895. Very good to fine; toned, one short tear to foot, touching 2-3 words.. An uncut chromolithographed paper doll advertising Loose Bros. Portland Oyster Crackers, part of a "collect-them-all" type of marketing campaign: "A Novelty Picture Card in every Carton of LOOSE BROS. Crackers". When constructed a gent sitting on a bench, leaning on his hat while readying the news. Includes directions for assembly, and adverts for other Loose Bros. products on the verso. Measures 5.5" by 4.25

Boston: Forbes Lith, 1895. Small area of missing surface litho on reverse. Toning on bottom left margin.. A 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" uncut Forbes multiple part interlocking paper doll depicting a little girl, her doll and a chair. Captioned at top "LOOSE BROS, Fine Chocolates have Flowing Cream Centers, a Novelty Picture Card in every Carton of LOOSE BROS. Crackers. Also includes instructions for construction. Reverse of chair promotes the product.

Brook's Spool Cotton, 1900. Very good. A little rubbed/dust soiled. Minor toning.. An uncut paper doll, produced as an advertising premium for Brook's Spool Cotton. When assembled, the paper doll stands on its own. It is a young blonde man with three hats/wigs and four different outfits, all fancy 17th century dress. Measures 7.5" by 6.5", instructions printed on verso.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin: John Hoffmann & Sons Co, 1895. Light foxing.. A 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" uncut paper doll printed on card stock. Depicts a 5 1/4" self-easel paper doll and two (2) costumes and hats. Promotional info on body of the doll for Hoffmann's Old Time Coffee. Reverse is blank.

New York, New York: George Steck & Co, 1890. Fine.. A charming uncut and unassembled paper doll house piano with instructions for assembly. Produced as a supplement, it advertises Steck Pianos by George Steck & Co. Chromolithographed card (9.5" by 5"), with ink stamp of Ball & Speich Pianos on verso.

New York, 30 Beekman St: McLoughlin, 1868. The folder is separated at the fold with tape repair and stain. Else fine.. A hand colored two-sided paper doll on 5 3/4" x 3" card. An uncut thread-stitched booklet with six uncut costumes and hats. All with elaborate detail and hand colored embellishments. The inside of the folder includes printed Directions for Making. From the Paper Dolls, Book Form., Series No. 3.

A 12 1/2" x 10 1/2" pressed board box with applied litho with images of "Indians and Cowboys" in traditional attire on the box top and side aprons. Includes 8 uncut sheets with 60 pieces of Native American in traditional attire presented in what appears to be historically accurate images (vs. stereotypical). It also includes 7 uncut sheets with 45 pieces of "cowboys", again presented in what appears to be historically accurate images. Printed on one side only.
