Description:
1880. Ephemera. Very good. From 1870 to 1882, John Silvis operated the Union Pacific Railroad Photograph Car, a traveling photo studio built in a train car. The most desireable images, like this one, have an illustration of the UPRR photograph car on the back (verso) of the mount. This CDV is mounted with an albumen photograph of a young girl seated in a chair with long fringe. Mount, light pink, roughly 2-7/16 by 4 inches, with rounded upper corners and square lower corners. The verso (back) of this card is printed in pink with a line drawing of the photograph car with Silva's name printed at one end. The logo image does not have the border seen on some mounts. The mount of this CDV is stiff, of the style that became common in the 1880s; the image is, however, undated and unidentified.

Description:
Matanzas, Cuba: Ediciones Vigía, 2016. 147 pages. 8-1/4 by 10-1/4 inches. An edition of 200 copies. Colección del Estero A selection of poems from four of the Holguín poet's previous collections: La rosa en su jaula; Los frutos de Taormina; Aspersores; and Dolor de la resurrección. The book is designed and illustrated by Elizabeth Valero and Frank David Valdés, with collage and handpainted elements, all housed in a decorated paper box. The text is photocopied onto white paper. This is one of the few Ediciones Vigía books designed by two artists. Valdés, one of the regular Vigía designers of recent years, frequently combines organic forms into a single image. In this case, the cover of the box is decorated with an anthropomorphic figure that one one side depicts a sort of bird-man and on the other shows an anatomical rendering of a human circulatory system. Other illustrations combine human elements with plants, another typical theme explored by Valdés. Other design motifs in the book,…

Description:
London: William Tweedie, 1860. First Edition. Hardcover. The first book on the Underground Railroad, published only in England while the fabled escape route for enslaved Americans was still active. William Mitchell was the son of an enslaved man and a Native American woman in North Carolina. According to the introduction by W. H. Bonner, a British abolitionist who encouraged Mitchell to write the book during a speaking tour of the United Kingdom, at a young age he was apprenticed to a plantation owner and toiled alongside enslaved workers for many years. The author helped escaped slaves reach Canada from Ohio between 1842 and 1855. The bulk of his book is comprised of anecdotes about people he encountered while working for the railroad, including a formerly enslaved woman who died from frostbite while protecting her three children and a former slave, John Mason, who brought Mitchell "in 19 months, 265 human beings, whom he had been instrumental in redeeming from Slavery." Mitchell recounts Mason's…

Description:
London: Methuen & Co, 1957. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. A collection of popular science essays, including the title piece on grafts and transplants, the field for which Medawar won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1960. Medawar (1915-1987) was a distinguished scientist whose research contributed significantly toward transplants as a medical therapy. He was also an innovative thinker on evolution and includes in this volume his essay "An Unsolved Problem in Biology", which tackles the question of senescence, or why organisms deteriorate with age. According to Google Scholar, this essay has been cited nearly 2400 times and its title has become synonymous with the question, with many papers on the subject claiming to have solved the riddle and just as many announcing that the problem remains a puzzle. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a spine-tanned dust jacket, that is otherwise very good. This copy is inscribed by Medawar to the evolutionary biologist Julian Huxley…

Description:
1985. Ephemera. In 1985, Ken Kesey asked the underground cartoonist best-known for his Checkered Demon character to design the dust jacket for his forthcoming collection of short stories, Demon Box. Wilson did, beginning with a large sketch and finishing with a finely drawn and painted design, but to no avail. The publisher didn't like it and instead went with a red jacket with abstract shapes (really, the worst looking of all of Kesey's books). This archive includes the large sketch made with marker with copious notes by Wilson in the margins (18 by 24 inches on brown kraft paper), the finished artwork (12 by 18 inches), an autograph letter, signed (ALS) from Wilson to an editor at Viking and an ALS from the editor to Wilson, two ink treatments of the author and title text, and two ALS from Wilson to the bookseller Peter Howard (Serendipity Books), sending him the artwork to sell. Accompanying this original material are photocopies of the letters sent from Kesey to Wilson about the project and a…
