Description:
London, John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1937. . First UK trade edition, first impression; 8vo; publisher's green cloth, Gill's Homeric bow design to upper board and titles to spine gilt, with the dust jacket. Boards somewhat browned but a very good copy in the rubbed and frayed dust jacket with a strip of surface loss to the front panel costing several letter extending slightly onto the spine panel. After the Bodley Head had successfully published their limited edition of 1936 without attracting any judicial actions, this first trade edition was put out for general sale. It too was left unprosecuted and paved the way for all subsequent printings in the UK. An especially handsome publication worthy of a masterpiece.

Lithograph printed in colour (image 50 x 84 cm; sheet 63 x 94,5 cm) after a drawing by Parsons; small tear in right margin, anciently laid-down but in fine condition. He chose to revisit nautical subjects when he returned to watercolours and lithography in… Read More
