Description:
Chicago, IL: Univ. of Chicago Press, 1940. First Edition. Original Wraps. Very Good in Wraps. First Edition. Original Wraps. Sponsored by the Art Institute of Chicago. Includes 19 plates and two text pages (Introductory Notes and Conclusion). This is a well known item in a very unusual form. It was also issued as a loose, unbound portfolio, which is relatively easy to find. This issue, which appears to be 'as issued by the press', has elements that would increase the production cost *and* be more fragile. The mounted cutout on the front wrapper adds signficantly to the production process and the plastic comb spine and acetate wrapper are fragile and prone to failure. The inner printed front wrap appears to be the same as what was printed on the outside of the portfolio. In a very cursory search, we find one such copy in an institutional collection and none available elsewhere. Very scarce/unusual in this form. Light shelf, edge wear, light marking/soiling to acetate wrappers, front wrapper partially… Read More

Description:
Portland, ME: Artist Book, 2001. Unique Edition. Hardcover. Fine in Fine Hand-Made Box.. Unique Edition. Hardcover. In the artist's words, "In 2001 I attended a class at Penland School of Crafts called Historic Books and Boxes and that's where I made this little book. It is styled after a late-eighteenth-century French book that a courtier would carry-printed pages listing important dates and events, like royal birthdays, with a pocket inside one cover for small bits and pieces, and a mirror inside the other for inspecting one's coiffure and keeping a surreptitious eye on the competition. The text and images in my book were collected and reassembled from an old textbook called Understanding the Universe, and from a book about teaching children to sew." In a period where a fair bit of "book art" is glib, Cawley's work is subtle and engaging. Where much is to be seen once, enjoyed and forgotten, Cawley's begs "rereading", as with each rereading one is able to trick out another nuance...another wee… Read More

London: Henningham Family Press, 2011. Deluxe Limited Edition. Mixed Forms. Fine in Fine Box. Deluxe Limited Edition. Mixed Forms. "Henningham's mordant wit and avant-garde flair is part of another poetic tradition stretching back to Wyndham Lewis, Ezra Pound and the Dada pranksters of Zurich, although the first truly modernist treatment of the conflict in English emerged only in 1937 with the publication of David Jones's In Parenthesis." - David Collard, The Times Literary Supplement "Scientists have recently identified First World War casualties using saliva gleaned from the postage stamps on their letters home. Samples taken from their teeth, cross-referenced with a simple swab taken from living relatives, are also identifying soldiers' remains. These events mean that DNA technology has unintentionally transformed the memorial to the Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey forever. This unidentified casualty was greeted by thousands of mourners in 1920, aware that he might be their loved-one, and… Read More

London: Parvenu Press, 2018. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Limited Edition. Hardcover. "These books I am printing are trying to combine being painted and printed; I always print like a painter anyway - the blocks are just another way of getting colour and image onto the paper - and each book, of a very small edition will be slightly different. I want it to be quite rough and immediate, not pretty at all - I am not sure my skills stretch to tragedy so rough and raw will have to do.... The text flickers between current events and concerns, structured around the medieval story of Perceval, The Holy Fool, and yes - The Ruin. I am trying to mirror the metaphors of the writing with the way I print - shreds of allusions and references in the imagery, cut shapes. Fragmented printing styles. The covers, if I ever get them dry in time, are trying to gather up and meld some of the whirling detritus of the world, both natural and man made - and compact it into a surface; I did this once for a unique volume,… Read More
