A very attractive binding on this classic.

Dust jacket is a bit edgeworn, but presents very well in a mylar cover; price intact on the front flap. Uncommonly early printing of this title in surprisingly good condition.

As issued, in original stiff decorative paper over boards. Spine has been repaired with transparent tape, otherwise only light wear to the covers; contents are generally clean. Originally issued in London in 1808, this is the first American edition of this charming juvenile tale comparing the hard-heartedness of Austerus with the kindness and generosity of Humanus. With six full-page engravings in addition the frontispiece; additionally, a large wood-engraved device on the title and at the tail of the final page. One in-text cut of two boys ice-skating above the opening page of the text. The six full page wood-cuts are printed on leaves with blank versos. Shaw & Shoemaker 33546; Rosenbach 514; Welch 1381.

One of the pamphlets in the "Bangorian controversy" which erupted in 1717 when the bishop of Bangor, Benjamin Hoadly, delivered a sermon before the king in which he denied that the church had any doctrinal or disciplinary authority. This was followed by two more editions the same year. ESTC T138339.

While a work of fiction, this is among that genre of vernacular history told through the lens of a freed enslaved person (Uncle Yorke in this case) in the early 19th century who recounts stories of Washington's time, Bacon's Rebellion, and "Indians." A solid copy with limited rubbing; spine is intensely sunned; small contemporary ink note on the verso of the first blank with some offsetting to the back of the frontispiece map; small moisture spot to the fore-edge of the textblock that has left a tideline to the outer margin about about a dozen leaves, not affecting text and not very off-putting; rear free endpaper is adhered to the final blank leaf at the top corner. A popular genre in the mid-19th century, there were many of these guides to the springs of Virginia and other attractions. The author, Edward A. Pollard is most recognized for his many Civil War histories, biographies, memoirs, and the perpetuation of the Lost Cause narrative. Sabin 63879.
