Rebound in cloth-backed marbled boards with leather spine label. Embossed library stamp on title page; no other libraray markings. Leather corners rubbed, some staining to fore edges, but text generally clean (a few smudges here and there), binding sound. "Carter wrote the book on returning to Britain from Victoria in 1870, when he discovered that the 'old country' was in a poor state economically, and that although the question of emigration was receiving a large amount of public attention, there was a general lack of knowledge as to the real conditions in Australia. Carter's book attempts to inform people as to the great opportunities in Victoria, although he promises to show 'the dark as well as the bright surface.'" (Victoria Museum). The color plates show "Port Phillip Heads and Queenscliff" and "Pontoon Bridge at Echuca.

Scarce program for the 1927 Nice Carnival and related festivities, with text in French and English. Six pages list parades, fetes, balls, races, and other events taking place over several weeks in February and March. There are also lists of committee members involved in planning the events and many advertisement for hotels, car services, and high-end shops in Nice. In addition to illustrations on the front and back covers, there are two color plates by Brun, an artist known for his travel posters of the French Riviera. The Nice Carnival is one of the world's most prominent carnival events, along with those held in Venice, Rio, and New Orleans. It it believed to have been held as early as the thirteenth century, and it now attracts several hundred thousand visitors each year.

Light soiling, old folding creases, general handling wear. The Volcano Bulletin was published weekly by the Hawaii Volcano Research Association on behalf of the Volcanology section of the U.S. Geological Survey. It was intended to "promote experiemental recording of earth processes," and readers were urged to "send articles, photographs, publications, and clippings about volcano and earthquake events, instruments, and investigations, especially around the Pacific." Most of this issue is devoted to discussion of the causes of lava sinking or subsiding in Halemaumau Pit (part of Kilauea Crater). There is also report on the past week's seismic action and fuming at Kilauea. Original issues of this newsletter are surprisingly scarce.

Small broadside or window sign, approximately 5.75" x 8.75" printed in black on tan stock slightly thicker than newsprint. Minor corner wear; near fine. The North Dakota Votes for Women League was organized in 1911 and held their first state convention in Fargo in 1912. The first statewide referendum on women's suffrage took place in 1914, but failed. In 1917, women gained the right to vote in municipal and presidential elections in North Dakota. On December 1, 1919, North Dakota became the 20th state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment.

Front hinge is cracked and has been reinforced with what appears to be archival tape. Binding is otherwise sound, text clean.
