Woodstock, VT: State Board of Agriculture, 1905. Softcover. Very good. 8 x 11 inches, oblong, in original pictorial wrappers. 99 pp, with dozens of illustrations from photographs. Light soiling and chipping to wraps, foxing to first two leaves, else very good. An attractive promotional that works hard to demonstrate that "Vermont offers opportunity for almost every human endeavor" before providing the prospective settler with more than 50 pages of listings of farms for sale. The listings are divided by county, and each includes a paragraph of description noting selling points (modern barns and farm equipment, mountain views, orchards, timber, etc) and the address and asking price. $1,500 could buy you a 160-acre farm with a 12-room house, two barns, trout brooks, and maple, pear, plum, and apple trees.

London: Edward Stanford, 1870. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. xiv, 214 pp, with colored folding map (of the Province of Victoria) and two color plates, but no ads. Rebound in cloth-backed marbled boards with leather spine label. Embossed library stamp on title page; no other libraray markings. Leather corners rubbed, some staining to fore edges, but text generally clean (a few smudges here and there), binding sound. "Carter wrote the book on returning to Britain from Victoria in 1870, when he discovered that the 'old country' was in a poor state economically, and that although the question of emigration was receiving a large amount of public attention, there was a general lack of knowledge as to the real conditions in Australia. Carter's book attempts to inform people as to the great opportunities in Victoria, although he promises to show 'the dark as well as the bright surface.'" (Victoria Museum). The color plates show "Port Phillip Heads and Queenscliff" and "Pontoon Bridge at Echuca.

Boards worn at extremities, private library bookplate on front pastdown, old tape repair to paper over front hinge. Binding tight, text clean. An important work of comparative law, analyzing the development of property law in India and Europe. The third edition was the first to contain the additional essays, which cover various aspects of Indian and Roman law.

Nice: L'Eclaireur de Nice, 1926. Softcover. Very good. 8 x 5.25 inches, [20] pp, in illustrated stapled wrappers. Light dust soiling and general wear from handling; very good. Scarce program for the 1927 Nice Carnival and related festivities, with text in French and English. Six pages list parades, fetes, balls, races, and other events taking place over several weeks in February and March. There are also lists of committee members involved in planning the events and many advertisement for hotels, car services, and high-end shops in Nice. In addition to illustrations on the front and back covers, there are two color plates by Brun, an artist known for his travel posters of the French Riviera. The Nice Carnival is one of the world's most prominent carnival events, along with those held in Venice, Rio, and New Orleans. It it believed to have been held as early as the thirteenth century, and it now attracts several hundred thousand visitors each year.

Edinburgh: John Ballatine and Co, 1811. Hardcover. Very good-. Second edition. 164 pp, in contemporary polished calf with gilt border and spine decoration, marbled endpapers. Front joint cracked, with board a bit wobbly bit still well attached, tiny chip to upper spine, foxing to one gathering that was apparently printed on inferior paper. Poems in addition to Don Roderick include the Palmer, the Maid of Niedpath, Wandering Willie, Hunting Song, the Violet, To a Lady, with Flowers from a Roman Wall, the Bard's Incantation, the Resolve, and Epitaph.

Title page and one-page introduction by Blanco are followed by 258 b/w half-tone plates showing all of the monuments along the U.S./Mexico border from El Paso to the Pacific. Carmichael has also siged the book on a few other pages and drawn a small sketch at the lower margin of the first page of the preface. Ink ex-libris stamp on title page, library shelf number label on front pastedown. All text in French.

Light rubbing, ownership signature dated 1904 on front free endpaper, small hold on front free endpaper where it appears someone erased a price too vigorously. Otherwise clean and sound. With Ellen Glasgow's signature on a 3.5 x 4-inch slip of paper laid in. The autograph was probably provided in response to a request; it does not appear to be clipped from a larger document. Glasgow's third novel, which explores the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Southern life.

Hawaii Volcano Observatory, Hawaii National Park: Hawaii Volcano Research Association, 1931. 8.5 x 11 inches, 4 pp, with 5 photographic illustrations. Good. Light soiling, old folding creases, general handling wear. The Volcano Bulletin was published weekly by the Hawaii Volcano Research Association on behalf of the Volcanology section of the U.S. Geological Survey. It was intended to "promote experiemental recording of earth processes," and readers were urged to "send articles, photographs, publications, and clippings about volcano and earthquake events, instruments, and investigations, especially around the Pacific." Most of this issue is devoted to discussion of the causes of lava sinking or subsiding in Halemaumau Pit (part of Kilauea Crater). There is also report on the past week's seismic action and fuming at Kilauea. Original issues of this newsletter are surprisingly scarce.

N.D. Votes for Women League. First Edition. Near fine. Undated, likely either 1914 or 1917. Small broadside or window sign, approximately 5.75" x 8.75" printed in black on tan stock slightly thicker than newsprint. Minor corner wear; near fine. The North Dakota Votes for Women League was organized in 1911 and held their first state convention in Fargo in 1912. The first statewide referendum on women's suffrage took place in 1914, but failed. In 1917, women gained the right to vote in municipal and presidential elections in North Dakota. On December 1, 1919, North Dakota became the 20th state to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment.

Ex-Santa Barbara Free Public Library, with early labels and stamps from that library, as well as an inscription on the title page reading "Public Library Sta Barbara [illegible] Col. John G. Kelley." Front hinge is cracked and has been reinforced with what appears to be archival tape. Binding is otherwise sound, text clean. Hill 1483: "This voyage commanded by Lieutenant Roquefeuil was only the second French expedition since that of Baudin in 1800-1804, and was the first voyage to be published since that earlier expedition. A voyage led by Josef-Cesar de Bourayne in 1806-1808 crossed the Pacific from Mauritius to Acapulco and back again, but there seems not to have been any published account of that voyage. We believe this is the John Bridge of the firm Rundell and Bridge, jewelers to the royal family. A few plates and one chart with foxing, but overall a very clean copy. Thomas M'Keevor served as the physician for the second group of Selkirk settlers that set out in 1812 for the Red River Colony in Canada. Arctic Bib. 10643: "The author, who sailed as surgeon on a Hudson's Bay Co. vessel's trip to Fort York, discusses the probably marine origin of icebergs, the nature of polar bears and the appearance and habits of Eskimos and Indians." Includes a three-page "Vocabulary of the Dialects" (described by the author as "a few words of Northern and Chippeway Indian language which I wrote down durng my stay at Fort York") and a one-page list of "a few familiar phrases in the Chippeway language."
