An elegant silk broadside printing the text of Henry Clay's farewell speech, resigning his position in Congress. Clay (1777-1852) represented Kentucky in the Senate for many years, first elected in 1806. His lengthy and important political career included Secretary of State and Speaker of the House, and several presidential bids. He was key in formulating the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Compromise of 1850, issues relative to slavery and statehood. Though he states that he is retiring from the Senate "forever," Clay would return to serve a final term from 1849 until his death in 1852

Very good overall. A very rare prospectus for the Valencia Copper Mining Company, operating in far northwestern California at the turn of the century. Although incorporated in Arizona Territory, the company's lands actually consisted of 558 acres along the New River in Trinity County, California. The promotional provides illustrations and text to describe the company's clearly unprecedented odds for success, with large deposits of uncommonly rich copper ore and a seemingly unending supply of wood, coal, and water for fueling the operation. [Londo, 1848. 17,[1]pp. Folio. Modern half morocco and red cloth, spine gilt. Cloth bubbling. A bit of light soiling. Near fine. The late 1840s saw a major push for the colonization of Vancouver Island. This series of thirteen letters includes a document issued by the British Crown establishing the right of the Hudson's Bay Company to colonize the island. The report describes Vancouver Island and the prospects for colonization. One of the reports is by James Douglas, a fur trader and Hudson's Bay Company official who in 1851 succeeded Richard Blanshard as governor of Vancouver Island. Considered the "father of British Columbia," Douglas became the first governor of the colony of British Columbia in 1858. A substantial archive of material from the seafaring life of Captain Benjamin Dyer of Massachusetts, documenting his naval activities over several decades. The letters and log books in this collection record Dyer's actions transporting American troops and supplies to Mexico during the Mexican- American War, voyages that took him to several American ports as well as to Australia and Europe, his observations on slavery and dueling in the American South, yellow fever in New York, and much more. An interesting collection of mid-19th-century Mississippi state laws from the period between 1831 and 1870. These session laws deal with issues relevant to a growing state in the American south, including slavery, Mississippi River development, and later, legal matters related to Reconstruction, among a multitude of other concerns. Uncommon work detailing the violent end of the Capuchin Franciscan mission in Spanish Guiana (now the Guayana region in eastern Venezuela). In early 1817 during the war for Venezuelan independence, Simón Bolívar entered Guayana, one the main centers of royalist opposition to the first Venezuelan republic. The Capuchins were sympathetic to the royalists and played an important role in encouraging the indigenous people of the mission to fight for Spain against the revolutionaries. In attacks between February and June of 1817, revolutionary troops killed a total of thirty Capuchin friars. Fray Nicolas de Vich was one of the few priests who managed to escape and tell his story in this funeral oration he preached in Spain celebrating the lives of his brothers. An occasional ink stamp of "Smead, Willis & Co" on a text page or plate (but not affecting the image), else very clean internally. Near fine. A full consideration of the heating and ventilation system designed by Isaac D. Smead, showing colored diagrams of the systems, and illustrations of the various buildings in which the design had been implemented. The numerous chromolithographic plates, printed in rich and varying color, show Smead's designs in riveting detail. This copy contains sixteen chromolithographic plates - two more than we have seen in other copies. A nice intersection of technical expertise and American color plate book production. Scarce. Bookplate of noted collector Luis Garcia Pimentel on front pastedown. Internally clean. Very good. Memoir of the Texas Revolution and the decisive Battle of San Jacinto, written by Gen. Santa Anna's secretary, including his official report of the campaign. The Battle of San Jacinto, fought on April 21, 1836, saw the swift defeat of Mexican forces by the Texian army, resulting in the conclusion of the war and Texan independence. "In reliability as a contemporary Mexican source on the Texas revolution ranks with Filisola's MEMORIAS; it is highly critical of Santa Anna" - Howes. Mainz, 1846.. 3pp. Folio. Crease at top of first page, slight stain at top not affecting text, else very good. An important promotional for the Society for the Protection of German Emigrants to Texas. Signed by the president of the Society, Prince Carl of Castell, it describes the colony, the number of emigrants who have gone to Texas, and adds numerous other details about the ways of getting there, costs, etc. A fine, important piece.

Bethel, Vt, January 25, 1837.. Printed form, approximately 8 x 7½ inches, completed in manuscript. Docketed in manuscript on verso. Old folds. Old stains along the left edge of the sheet, small hole at each end of lower horizontal sheet. About very good. A share in the Vermont Texas Land Company, organized in September 1836. The share is made out to Whitman Howard of Braintree, Vermont in Orange County, and signed by N. Williams, George Lyman, and Julius Converse. Lyman and Converse were both justices of the peace in Windsor County in the 1840s, and Converse went on to be governor of Vermont from 1872 to 1874. Beginning in 1820 the government of Mexico opened Texas to settlement by foreigners, provided they agreed to abide by the law and be morally upright citizens. This opened the way for many American settlers. Texas declared itself a free republic in March 1836, and shortly thereafter the Vermont Texas Land Company was organized. Blindstamped red paper in the form of faux leather, gilt pictorial embossed illustration on front board, string-tied. Minor peeling and rubbing to boards. Most leaves loose between boards, images clean and in good condition. Very good overall. An interesting vernacular photograph album kept by a member of the United States 81st Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Wildcats," in occupied Japan. The division embarked for Hawaii in June of 1944, and saw action with heavy casualties in Palau and Peleliu. They were deployed to the Philippines for most of the rest of the war, and after the Japanese surrender were stationed in Aomori Prefecture as a part of the Allied occupation force. A highly entertaining collection of vernacular photographs capturing the lives of young African-American G.I.s and their romantic interests in a village in Thailand during the latter years of the Vietnam War. The photographs show African-American men in both uniforms and street clothes, often posed alone or with Thai locals, almost exclusively women. The men are seen at work and play, including an image of the gun shop with a sign labeled "Phase Section" on the front and a large military van with a similar sign reading "2 Orange."
