With contributions from Yamanokuchi Baku, Shinichiro Watanabe, and others. VAN was a long-lived satirical magazine that lasted from 1946 to 1949. It published comics, caricatures, articles, fiction, and criticism. It served as a spring board for a number of authors and as an important voice of dissent against the Occupation Forces and post-war government.

Milano: Achille Mauri, 1972. 8vo, pp. 139, [1]; text in English and Italian; 6 chapters in six separate staple-bound gatherings, laid into a printed stiff paper chemise as issued. Also laid in is a table of contents for the first two issues of the series, and a folding broadsheet with a color print by Roy Lichtenstein. Fine, the chemise faded and very good. Umberto Eco was a cofounder of VS, and contributes here a chapter titled "Introduction to a Semiotics of Iconic Signs." Also with contributions from Christian Metz, Abraham A. Moles, Emanuela Cresti, and Edward T. Hall.

Washington DC: Agency for International Development, 1967. Oblong 8vo, staple bound, pp. [2], 19, [1]; yellow printed paper wrappers, some soiling on upper cover, very good; laid in is a 4 p. vacancy announcement detailing the context and requirements for jobs with the bureau. An influx of refugees are cited as the reason for the need for personnel, with 109 health and sanitation positions vacant, 9 engineers, 9 educators, etc.

Cambridge: Macmillan & Co., London, 1861. First edition, 8vo, pp. viii, 483, [1], 23, [1] ads; bottom of spine slightly cracked else very good and sound in orig. pictorial green cloth stamped in gilt on upper cover and spine. Galton, the cousin of Charles Darwin and the originator of eugenic studies, whose seminal work, Finger Prints (London, 1892), led to the adoption of a entirely new system of criminal identification, was interested in tourism and vacations. His earlier work, The Art of Travel; or, Shifts and Contrivances in Wild Countries (1859) dealt with how to travel efficiently and safely, went through at least five editions over the next twenty years. In the present book, Galton edits 13 travel accounts including "The Allelein-Horn," by Leslie Stephen (Virginia Woolf's father), his own "Visit to North Spain," and H. F. Henry Hartshorne "was a strong advocate of the rights of women to study medicine" (DAB). The Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania was the second medical institution in the world established to provide women with a medical degree.

Edition limited to 400 copies printed by Andrew Hoyem, and signed by Valenti Angelo on the colophon; folio, pp. 97, [2]; fine copy in original red cloth-backed orange paper-covered boards, printed paper label on spine; plain white paper jacket soiled and slightly chipped. Illustrated throughout with 43 facsimiles of Angelo's work, mostly in color and mostly full-page. Includes texts by Robert Grabhorn, Sherwood Anderson, Annis Duff, Valenti Angelo himself, as well as a bibliographical checklist of Angelo's work by Anne Englund. Design of title page and decorations throughout by Angelo who has also added colors and gold by hand.

An unusual provincial illustrated book with charming lithographs after pen-and-ink sketches. Cobbold was a minor novelist and his wife, who apparently had a hand in the work, a minor dramatist. From the library of Kim Merker. Raeburn Miller and Kim Merker were the founders of the Stone Wall Press and Duncan was their mentor and instructor. This is the first Cummington Press book printed in Iowa. And it is the first book of Mona Van Duyn. Richmond 66.

First trade edition of the author's first book, 8vo, pp. xi, [1], 301; decorative headpieces throughout; original tan cloth lettered in burgundy on front cover and spine; the spine darkening, the covers lightly smudged, and a former owner's stamp and signature on front endpapers; overall, approaching very good. Munroe (1860-1936) is best known as the influential first editor of Poetry: A Magazine of Verse and an enthusiastic early supporter of modern poets including Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, and Carl Sandburg.

Quebec: Ls. A. Proulx, 1927. First edition, 12mo, pp. 382, [1]; very good copy in original brown cloth, gilt-stamped on upper cover and spine. Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye (1685-1749) was a French Canadian military officer, fur trader and explorer. In the 1730s he and his four sons opened up the area west of Lake Superior and thus began the process that added Western Canada to the original New France in the Saint Lawrence basin. He was also the first European to reach North Dakota and the upper Missouri River. In the 1740s two of his sons crossed the prairie as far as Wyoming and were the first Europeans to see the Rocky Mountains.
