Description:
Lucien Vogel / Conde Nast, Paris, 1922; First Edition; octavo (7 1/2" x 9 3/4"); 4 pages; Illustrated. Travelogue of a trip to Pompei, written from an aesthete’s perspective by celebrated artist George Barbier for Lucien Vogel’s trend-setting Parisian fashion journal, La Gazette Du Bon Ton. Recognized world wide as the epitome of good taste and style, the Gazette was issued monthly between November 1912 and December 1925, minus a hiatus during The First World War. It employed the foremost designers, artists, writers, and critics of its age, and each of the magazine’s illustrated articles was impeccably designed and finely printed in individual single-fold folios on heavy handmade paper, then loosely laid into an outer printed folder. All artwork was produced using the costly pochoir, or stencil, technique of hand coloring. Fine, with four beautiful in-text Art Deco style color pochoir illustrations by Andre Marty. From Gazette No. 7, 1922.Not a reproduction. Text in French.

Theatrical Studio, Chicago, 1925; Vintage signed silver gelatin 8" x 10" portrait photograph, circa 1925, of magician/comedienne Doreen Palmer, wife and stage partner of Jay Palmer in the magic act "Jay Palmer And Doreen." Jay Palmer began his show business career in 1921 as an assistant to vaudeville magician The Great Leon (Leon Harry Levy, 1876-1951), and later to Harry Houdini. After the the Palmers met and married they formed their own act, in which Jay performed most of the magic and Doreen provided comedic counterpoint by way of condescending criticism of her husband’s technique. They were well known for their original illusion "The Magic Kettle," in which a small pitcher poured out a seemingly endless stream of water, and the duo enjoyed a long popularity, continuing their act on both stage and television into the 1960’s. The photo is inscribed and signed to friends Leon Jr. (son of The Great Leon), and his wife "Teddy," a much revered couple in… Read More
