John Sanford (1904-2003) is the name of the principal character in The Water Wheel, a first novel by Julian Shapiro published in 1933. Adopting it as a pseudonym, the writer has used it ever since. Sanford/Shapiro wrote half his books after the age of 80. (Gives us old guys hope). The author published a five volume autobiography for which he was awarded The PEN Faulkner Award and the L.A. Times lifetime achievement award.
