Moscow, Ogiz Molodaia Gvardia, 1933. . First edition, square 8vo (22.2 x 19 cm); colour illustrations throughout; original printed wrappers, a fine copy. A vividly illustrated story set in the Siberian taiga tells the story of Churaul', a brave and sharp-eyed Evenk hunter who catches foxes, sables, and squirrels. The local vodka-drinking merchant doesn't offer him a fair price for his beautiful furs but Churaul' has no choice but to accept in order to feed his daughter. He also has to pay taxes to the Tsar and so must head out in to the wilderness again in bad weather to catch more furs. The story ends positively, however, as the new people have come to the taiga - Russians. With them comes fair prices for furs and soviet meetings are convened to discuss local matters. The illustrator Anna Borovskaia was born in Konevo, a tiny village in Arkhangelsk province in 1901. Her rural and northerly upbringing no doubt inspired the beautiful illustrations for this book. Borovskaia first studied at the…

John Senex 1710 [-1728]. . Double-page engraved map on 2 sheets joined, with full contemporary hand-colouring, size: 640 mm by 940 mm, sheet size: 680 by 970 mm. John Senex (1678-1740) was one of the foremost mapmakers in England in the early eighteenth century. He was also a surveyor, globemaker, and geographer. As a young man, he was apprenticed to Robert Clavell, a bookseller. He worked with several mapmakers over the course of his career, including Jeremiah Seller and Charles Price. In 1728, Senex was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society, a rarity for mapmakers. The Fellowship reflects his career-long association as engraver to the Society and publisher of maps by Edmund Halley, among other luminaries. He is best known for his English Atlas (1714), which remained in print until the 1760s. After his death in 1740 his widow, Mary, carried on the business until 1755. Thereafter, his stock was acquired by William Herbert and Robert Sayer (maps) and James Ferguson (globes).
