Description:
2 p.l., 192 pp. 8vo, orig. green sheep-backed marbled boards (boards a little wormed), spine gilt (Western style). "Te Dordrecht, bij Blusse en van Braam, 1854. Nagedrukt te Nagasaki in het 4de Haar van Ansei (1857." First edition printed in Japan; one of a very few Nagasaki ban, printed on Japanese paper using metal type and bound Western-style in Nagasaki by the Japanese government in the earliest years of the resumption of Western printing in that country. We find no copy of our Nagasaki imprint in WorldCat. All Nagasaki ban are rare, and this is the first "Nagasaki ban" we have seen on the market. Our edition can also be described as a Nishi yakusho ban, meaning a book printed by the Nagasaki (West) city government. When Western printing ceased in all of Japan in the early years of the 17th century, the technology of letterpress printing with metal type died in that country. It was revived again more than 200 years later by Motoki Shozo, Japan's Gutenberg. "In 1848 a printing press and fonts of… Read More

Description:
Woodcut vignette on title, two engraved headpieces, five folding engraved plates, & woodcut diagrams in the text. 6 p.l., 210, [3] pp. Folio, early 19th-cent. half red morocco & red boards (minor browning), flat spine gilt. Toulouse: J. Pech, 1679. First edition, and now rare on the market; this copy belonged to Dominique François Jean Arago (1786-1853), the great French scientist who made important contributions to astronomy, electro-magnetism, and optics (see D.S.B., I, pp. 200-03). This book, Fermat's only substantial publication apart from his edition of Diophantus (both prepared and published posthumously by his son), contains the majority of Fermat's mathematical work. Included are Fermat's important researches on analytic geometry, developed concurrently with, but independently of, Descartes, as well as his method of maxima and minima, based upon which some have proclaimed Fermat the true first discoverer of the differential calculus. It also includes the first… Read More

[80] pp. Small square 4to (122 x 122 mm.), orig. printed softcover with flaps, orig. printed dust-jacket, title on spine. Firenze & Lugo: Exempla & Exit & Zona Archives, 1988. A nice copy of this uncommon Sol LeWitt artist's book; one of 350 copies (of which 50 were signed by the artist). The receipt of a Kawara "I am still alive" telegram inspired LeWitt to formulate the "variations", for example: "I AM STILL ON KAWARA," "I AM ALIVE, ON KAWARA," "STILL, AM I ALIVE," "STILL, AM I ON?". These 74 sensical permutations were first printed (in English, German, and French) in the Studio International issue (1970 July-August) edited by Seth Siegelaub (1941-2013) and Lucy Lippard (b. 1937). Maurizio Nannucci (b. 1939) published this book under his Zona Archives imprint. It has a permutation per page, printed uppercase in a single line, some with commas or question marks added. In fine condition. ❧ Maffei & de Donno, Sol LeWitt Artist's Books (2009), p. 122 (pictured). Sol LeWitt: Libros, El concepto… Read More

Black & white illus. Unpaginated. Small 4to, printed softcover & glassine jacket, title on spine. Geneva: Boabooks, 2014. First edition, one of 50 signed and numbered copies. From the artist's website: "Various Small Meals and Roses is a reappropriation of Ed Rusha's Various Small Fires and Milk, adding to the many remakes published over the last four decades. The book was part of an eponymous installation that was presented in La Spezia, and was inspired by one of the many staged arrangements that Ed Rusha made from his books, a tribute that combined photography with cooking improvisation." Vienna: M. A. Schmidt, 1780. First edition, and a really fine copy, of this beautifully decorated and attractive book. This work contains a detailed account and history, district by district, of the mines of Bohemia, an area of great mineral wealth including coal, lignite, iron, and the raw materials for porcelain. Peithner provides much information on the earlier and contemporary mineralogical and geological histories of the area. Also included is a chapter on the rivers and streams contributing to the Moldau, Elbe, and Eger rivers, with mineralogical remarks. Description:
xliv, 292 pp. 8vo, cont. boards (corners a little worn). Berlin: C.F. Voss & Son, 1786. First edition of this scarce book by the Jewish physician, philosopher, and scientist Marcus Herz (1747-1803). Reputed to be one of the best doctors of his time, he was the first, according to Hirsch, to offer lectures in experimental physics in Berlin. These lectures, first offered in 1776, were extremely popular and attracted all the leading residents of Berlin including members of the royal family, among them the future Frederick William III. The present work is concerned with the various types of vertigo, their symptoms, and treatments. Clearly, some case histories describe epilepsy (sometimes physicians did not know whether to classify the case as one or the other). Very good copy. ❧ A.D.B., 12, pp. 260-62. Description:
8vo, cont. speckled boards, some foxing. Weimar: [1785]. Dated 1 October 1784, this is one of only two accounts in print by Hahn - the first appeared earlier in the decade in the same journal - of his famous cylindrical calculating machines; they were the first fully functional and well-known four-species mechanical calculating machines. In this article, Hahn accuses Johann Helfrich Müller (1746-1830), of stealing his designs in order to manufacture a very similar machine. Hahn (1739-90), a German vicar, had a great interest in mechanics and mathematics. He designed a number of clocks and astronomical machines and wrote books about improved time-keeping devices. He began to design a calculating machine in 1770 as an aid to his manufacturing of clocks and planetariums. During his lifetime, he managed to construct about ten of these machines, of which only two survive today. He was clearly aware of the machines of Leibniz and Leupold but made many improvements; his are significantly… Read More

This beautifully rendered scroll of natural history paintings was executed, with one exception, by Akio (or Keigu) Yamamoto (1827-1903), Confucian scholar, doctor, botanist, and highly gifted artist. He was born in Kyoto, the son of the prominent doctor and botanist Boyo Yamamoto (1778-1859), the direct disciple of Ono Ranzan (1729-1810), the famous professor of botany who wrote a series of classic botanical books. Keigu "continued his father's work in his private school in Osaka and spent his time organizing meetings that were regularly attended by both honzogaku amateurs and Japanese biologists."-Federico Marcon, The Knowledge of Nature and the Nature of Knowledge in Early Modern Japan, p. 301. Keigu travelled widely throughout Japan, drawing plants and animals. He gave botanical instruction to the Meiji emperor and other members of the royal family. Description:
152 pp. 8vo, orig. pink printed wrappers bound in attractive modern marbled wrappers. [From the upper wrapper]: "Perthes & Besser Buchhandlung Hamburg 1816." Following a nine-year apprenticeship, Friedrich Christoph Perthes (1772-1843), established his own book business in 1796. Two years later, he entered into a partnership with his brother-in-law, Johann Heinrich Besser (1775-1826). They soon became one of the leading publishing and bookselling firms of northern Germany. During the Napoleonic period, Perthes experienced many difficulties caused by his public resistance to French influences and was forced to leave Hamburg. This remarkable priced catalogue lists about 3000 books published in Britain and France from 1812 to 1816; it is quite incredible to imagine the quality and range of the stock of foreign books held by Perthes & Besser. Pages 1-77 list the British books; pages 81-149 the French books, and pages 150-52 list about 60 books published in North America,… Read More
