Wonderful coloured illustration to every page, usual diminutive large headed people. Rollicking verse by Gerrard. Rowdy adventure of family and neighbours embarking on wild journey on the Oregon Trail. No inscriptions, very small slight erasure to front endpaper, otherwise a Fine crisp copy (no dustwrapper issued). Gerrard (b. Lancashire 1935) trained at Salford School of Art. In 1979 he gave up teaching to paint full time. His second book The Favershams (1982) won the New York Times Best Illustrated children's book of the year in 1982 and the Bologna Children's Book Fair prize in 1983. SECOND EDITION (stated on title page), circa 1905, miniature book, 79 x 79 mm, 3 x 3 inches, pale green cloth, yellow, red and black illustration to upper cover, top edges red, 83 pages. 20 very jolly lively colour plates each facing a 4 line verse, all printed on thick card, 1 side only. All the people and creatures are the subjects of King Wallypug of Why. There are dressed pigs, folk from Japan, a hippotamus, a crocodile, a salamander and a newspaper selling rabbit, all dressed. The last is Dumpsy Deazil, a pretty doll. A couple of very minor marks to cloth, a neat inscription on blank page 5, title of plate page 11 written in a small neat hand across lower corner of plate, a name written in the same hand across lower corner of plate page 35 (see images), occasional slight dusty mark to margins. Circa 1880, approximately 170 x 220 mm, 6¾ x 8¾ inches, 7 hand coloured sheets as required: 2 plates of characters, 3 plates of scenes, and 2 wings, plus original booklet with play and stage directions: 165 x 105 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, no wrappers called for, 16 pages of text including covers. Small faint pink smudge to background of first sheet, another very small to upper margin of Wings No.1, the rest all clean and bright, sign on lower cover of booklet next to spine that it had at some time been stuck in an album, no loss of text, otherwise very clean. A very good plus complete set of sheets and with rare booklet. The play or ballad opera by Charles Dibdin was first performed in 1774 at the Haymarket and juvenile drama versions of it were issued by Skelt, Green and Redington before Pollock acquired his business from Redington in 1876.
