Description:
London: Jones & Co., 1830. Half Calf. Very Good. 4to, 11 x 8.5 inches, 28 x 21 cm. 18 pp following by unpaginated plates on card stock, each of which is accompanies by leaf with two sides of text description. Plates do not appear to follow any particular order such as might be suggested by 4 pp list of engravings in rear (separating North and South Wales), but all plates are present. There are two steel engraved images per plate. Curiously a second title page appears roughly in middle of book, and this title bears a different image. It would seem that since this title bears date it was intended for the front. In all there are 114 plates and 226 images capturing the raw beauty, ruins and drama of the Welsh country. The calf spine has some scuffs and vertical streak-like lines from use. Some foxing scattered through the text, with a bit heavier foxing on the first title and a few early leaves. One text leaf (Menai Bridge) with crinkling and discoloration in upper corner not affecting text.…

Description:
Campello, MA: Geo. E. Keith Company, 1921. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. 8vo brochure (23 by 15 cm), 84 pp plus wraps cover, profusely illustrated with black and white photos and illustrations and four pages with color. Illustrations are of shoes made by the company, its stores, interior and exterior, windows, ads, models, miscellaneous. The George Keith Company of Campello MA was a successful shoe manufacturer that issued this magazine for almost two decades as a promotional vehicle, combining advertising and trade catalog-like information with articles, poems and short stories that not very subtly related to footwear and the company's products. Although issued for a good number of years, this is a true piece of ephemera in terms of scarcity, with OCLC showing the only institutional holding at the New York Public Library. Its interest lay in the marketing approach, more public relations or like today's infomercial than a blatant ad, in the shoe fashions of the day, and an insight…

Description:
Rochester, New York: H. H. Warner & Co., 1889. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. 4to. 29.5 by 15.5 cm. 32 pp. plus wraps. Versos are generally devoted to concise definition of words, and facing rectos are predominantly testimonials for the Warner & Co.'s various remedies. Inside cover features an illustration of a safe, as in a bank safe, which is meant as a metaphor for the company's "safe" cures. Warner had a diverse assortment of nostrums, including for kidney and liver, Bright's disease, female issues, malaria, and on and on. Elsewhere is a promotion for Warner's cookbook. A typical, if somewhat larger, pharmaceutical promotional flyer of the day, since these often included texts and illustrations not directly germane to the products being hawked but were coupled with the promotion to incentivize recipients to glance at the item, and possibly save it for a while. Moderate wear and soiling on the cover. Tiny dogear on lower corner of some leaves. Age toning to the leaves, as to be…

Boston: S.D. Warren Company, 1919. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to. 108 pp entirely made up of full page illustration mock examples of printing specimens, with many being advertisements, pages from trade catalogues, pages that might be in decor, sporting or general interest magazines, etc. Many pages with color, and a mix of photographs and drawings. Often pictures accompanied with short text in which the Warren Company explains the printing product it is using and in which it pitches a particular enduser. In essence, this book is a trade catalogue, and a highly handsome one at that. Some dark soil marks on buckram spine. Two dampstains affecting final few leaves on edges but not impinging on any of the illustration pages. Clean interior otherwise. A very good copy.

Description:
Decorated Cloth. Very Good. N.d., circa 1890. 4to. 28 by 22 cm. Sixteen mounted watercolors. The best watercolors here have an impressionistic panache, and generally they show evidence of a deft brush. The painter, whom we would guess was English, traveled to Virginia and the American Southwest. The American views include Washington from the Potomac, a Virginia farmhouse, "Negro" shanty dwellings near Washington, Washington's home in Mount Vernon, the San Miguel Mission in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a bell at this mission, "Mexican" houses in Santa Fe, and Glorieta, which appears to be a typical village of the wild west, a western ranch house on a hill. Other paintings include a house in Mayfield, Sussex, and its dining room, a young man in full chaps, sailboats, Battersea Bridge in London, an old church in Mayfield, and hills by Braemar. The album has had several of its paintings removed. We know this because the underlying leaf remains with the old caption. Condition otherwise: moderate, to…

Description:
London, 1914. Portfolio. Very Good. 45 watercolors in all, measuring 31.5 by 25.5 cm. The illustrations generally have outlines done in pen-and-ink, as the norm for this sort of functional art. Each of the watercolors are mostly on a heavy card, and they have ink and penciled notes about the costume, its specs, naming the character for whom the costume is intended, and sometimes the name of the actor. The playwright, Louis Napoleon Parker (1852-1944), was best known for historical dramas, of which, "Drake", was obviously one. His best known play, Disraeli, was produced one year prior to "Drake" as a vehicle for George Arliss, who did a movie adaptation in the early sound era two decades later. This production was mounted at His Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. Housed in a thick portfolio case which is now torn, with detached flaps, etc. The cards have light soiling.

Description:
Wraps. Very Good Minus. 44 oblong pages of sublime Japanese watercolored panoramas, views and landscapes. A few of the images are double paged; all have a flow that provide a strong cohesion to the work, which qualifies as a pictorial essay. The treatment of buildings, topography, and flora is both impressionistic yet specific, and there is a dream-like quality that is powerfully seductive. The album measures 6.5 by 9.5 inches, 24 by 17 cm. The wrap covers are worn, with heavy edgewear, warping, soiling. The tissue thin leaves are folded over, and some of the folds have closed tears. While there is scattered light soiling on the pages, the images have their essential integrity intact.

Description:
Paintings depicting professions and various other pursuits, customs, etc. 8vo. 26 watercolor paintings pasted onto leaves. Watercolors were executed onto a thin paper and then pasted onto the card. The mounting of the paintings has protected them from tearing and chipping, at the sacrifice of now being subject to the vissitudes of a leaves made of an acidic, or high pulp content, card stock. Also the paste used in mounting appears here and there as a light, spectral presence. Subjects of paintings include such things as a New Year's greeting, the carrying of a bridal chaise chair, a Chinese archer, a Chinese wedding (bride, groom, officiator), the painting of an idol, "idolatrous worship", an itinerant confectioner, silk spinning, a cobbler, tailors, hatters, money changers, street musicians, fortune telling, etc. etc. The women have bound feet, and generally one sees depicted here a China as it was in the mid-19th century. Twelve of the illustrations are fully, richly colored, while the…

Description:
N.d., 1905-1932. 43 leaves, with 86 watercolors of different views from England, France, Italy, the Lowlands, Switzerland, all done by a very accomplished hand during the first third of the 20th century. The views of both panoramic and close-up, natural scenery and architectural, with bridges, castles, cottages aplenty. The artist was concerned with capturing the beautiful and rendering it so -- this was not the effort of a modernist cynic wallowing in irony, the sordid, the underside of things -- and so there is a dream-like quality to the art. That all was done by one artist contributes to the satisfying cohesion of the album. The images might not individually be particular original in their treatment, but that doesn't negate the sensual, sensate appeal of them, and the effort that each image represented speaks to a level of appreciation for sights that is impossible to achieve in our era of commodified tourism. This kind of album is an affirmation of the rewards to be garnered on the Grand…

Description:
New York: McLoughlin Brothers. Wraps. Good. N.d., mid-19th Century. 12 pp. With three hand-colored illustrations. With series of four line stanzas containing moral aphorisms intended to be instructive guides for children. Some of the couplets may now strike readers as callous and others as pitiable, but this can also be a result of an antiquated wording. An example: "Since I love to help the weak, Though they're neither fair nor witty." This was issued as part of a series of pietistic or religious-tinged publications which became a profitable sideline niche for McLoughlin, now better known for lighter children's fare and its puzzles and games. The brochure is about 5.5 x 4 inches. There is soiling on the yellow wraps and some within.

Description:
London: Tilt and Bogue, 1841. First Edition. Full Morocco. Very Good. Unpaginated, with 36 hand-colored engravings of the heroines in Scott's novels, each plate accompanied by a text leaf with and telling passage that is telling of the heroines character, mettle, charm. Typically this work is encountered in black and white. The portraits epitomize ideals of beauty from the 1840s, and thus there are cosmetic similarities shared by all the ladies depicted, but through dress, expression, stance, a rich and variegated gallery emerges, and one can not gaze at these portraits without appreciating the rapture and awe Scott himself felt for his creations. The book is bound in a lushly decorated morocco. Both boards have an intricate band of swirling S motives and flowers constituting its dominant elements, and in the center is an armorial lion surrounded by an elaborate lozenge of floral vines with a calligraphic flow to them. The spine is divided into six compartments, five of which have an…

Description:
Wraps, staple bound. Cloth folder. Very Good. Highly original, comical anthropormphic illustrations of an accident-prone rooster. N.d., circa 1930s. Oblong, 21 by 28.5 cm. Unpaginated, 32 pp, including cover. The story line is loose, even disjointed, with each page representing a separate incident or story line. Tidbits of satire pervade the work, directed here at the clergy, there at sots. Some of the humor contained in the captions is obscure, but the visual humor never slackens, and whatever the merits of the overall narrative, however, the watercolors are irresistible, and while anthropomorphism is a commonplace in juvenilia, these renderings somehow stand apart as not being derivative. The artist also filled out the illustrations with town streets, buildings, landscapes and various objects that are just right -- realistic yet not fussily literal. His was a confident hand that with seeming ease created pictures with real panache and style. The dating is a bit tricky. There are numerous…
