Description:
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1854. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first printing. An absolutely magnificent copy in publisher's brown cloth binding decorated in blind with titles in gilt on spine, with 8 pages of ads at rear dated September, 1854. Near Fine with softening to spine ends, light wear to corners and several faint scratches to the front and rear cover, gilt stamping on spine is very bright and sharp. Abrasions to front and rear paste downs, where at the front it appears perhaps someone tried to efface a former owner's name. One page gathering sits a bit proud in what appears to be a binder's error where sewing was missed at the bottom stab holes. Housed in a custom slipcase. A very fresh and unrestored copy in the original cloth, which has a luster that very few extant copies still retain.

Description:
np: [No Publisher], 1945. Small collection of union documents from a welder during WWII, housed in leather pocket folder. The owner, one Victoria Brown of San Francisco, attended the War Production Training School in Seattle, where she learned to weld, and then at age 23 joined the International Brotherhood of Boiler Makers, Iron Ship Builders, and Helpers of America as an apprentice welder. During the war the union's ranks swelled to approximately 350,000. She found work at the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Co. for a few months. This small collection includes her union member's pocket folder, dues receipts, a promotion card, the backing paper of an Army-Navy Production Award emblem with a message from President Roosevelt and his facsimile signature, and her termination notice-- the reason given: "Going back to San Francisco." Apparently she did just that. Very Good overall with folding and light wear to documents. Leather pocket folder could be used again with ease-- hardly worn at all.

New York: Dorrance and Company, 1927. First Edition. Very Good. First edition. Signed by Smedley D. Butler on half-title, inscribed to former owner, a Lt. Raymond A. Price (whose impressions are on the prelims), and dated January 30, 1935. 238 pp. Bound in publisher's navy cloth with red lettering. A Very Good copy with light dampstain and slight warp to bottom of front board, small nick to fore edge of pages, edges a bit foxed and dust-soiled, lacking jacket. Text clean. A rare signature from Butler, an extremely popular figure nicknamed "Old Gimlet Eye" who was the most-decorated Marine in history at the time of his retirement. By 1935, the time of this signature, Butler had undergone political reawakening, condemning war and its profiteers with his classic book War is a Racket. He also had helped to expose a plot by American industrialists to stage a fascist coup against FDR. The establishment and the nascent military-industrial complex had created one of their greatest foes, obscure as he is today.
