8vo, original blind-stamped cloth, expertly recased, retaining the original spine and endpapers, two large folding maps, 476 pp. Some rubbing to extremities, and some foxing throughout, bookplates on front pastedown. Overall very good. This work is a “revised and corrected” version of a book that was published on the evils of the apprentice system in the British West Indies in the 1830s. A few weeks before the Abolition Act of 1833, the British government established a system of indentured servitude on the Islands that basically kept them as slaves. Sturge and Harvey, both prominent Quaker anti-slavery activists, were among the new system’s most vocal critics.

J.H. Colton ((1800-1893) founded a map making dynasty that began in New York in the early 1830s. Colton produced his maps with steel engravings, resulting in good quality. The current map has the attractive boarder, which was a trademark of Colton maps. The map features the states of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin and Iowa, and the Nebraska and Minnesota territories. Description:
8vo original cloth, 260 pp. Backstrip somewhat faded and lettering on front cover is rubbed, paper a bit aged, but only slightly. Very good overall. Bishop William Moses was known as the "Baptist Garvey", and was actually a close friend of Marcus Garvey. He stood by Garvey when he was under attack and indicted for mail fraud, and continued to speak out in his behalf. Unfortunately he was also involved with Garvey in a disastrous attempt to negotiate an agreement with the Ku Klux Klan. Garvey lost a lot of supporters because of this, and Moses, pastor of the Philadelphia Zion Baptist Church, was asked to leave the church by the elders. This work focuses on the subjugation of the dark races by whites. Moses' goes through history to make his point, and much of the discussion is on the international community. His solution for black advancement seems to be "black evangelism", or an active role of the church in the social and political development of the dark races.

Description:
Small 8vo original cloth, illustrated, 339, [60 ]pp. Binding scuffed a little, with some minor wear to extremities. Top hinge a little weak, but still reasonably solid, and normal aging. Very good overall. The book is illustrated with six color lithographs showing the different races. Written shortly after the Civil War, this work is pretty direct in terms of its racist views of white supremacy. Van Erie argues that the natural state of Blacks is in slavery, and efforts to change that would result in misery for all. He goes on to indicate that the North’s misguided efforts to impose it’s will on the South with respect to the Negro was forcing Southerners "to a fate more horrible than death itself!"

Description:
8vo, pamphlet, later paper wrappers, two folding maps, 117, [2] pp. Minor foxing and browning, a bit of staining in the margins mostly, maps also have the staining in margins, but are in great condition otherwise; overall very good. The goal of this bill in the House of Representatives was to connect the Atlantic and Pacific with a railroad. Specifically, this undertaking was to construct a railroad and electric telegraph from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean. Whitney seems to have played a critical role in this process, and started to work on the railroad project as early as 1841. The pamphlet contains a lot of information on early railroad issues, especially imports and exports.

Description:
4to, textured red cloth, gilt title on top cover and spine, illustrated, 544 pp. Light rubbing to extremities, slight aging; about near fine. This was the first installment of this book, which was compiled by Harold "Speed' Johnson. It is a rich volume of baseball information from a significant year in the history of the sport. The book includes photographs of the players, and useful information about their records. Not surprisingly Babe Ruth got double page coverage, who at that time had 653 career home runs and a lifetime batting average of .354. According to Who's Who his first contract was for $600. Two-page coverage was also given to Ty Cobb, and of course the legendary Lou Gehrig. This is an incredible collector's piece from a time when baseball was really the national pastime.

Very good overall. This is a first edition of a rare and important work on Civil Rights, which is printed by Benjamin Bacon, one of the compilers of the first statistical study on African Americans in Philadelphia. The pamphlet actually contains some statistics on the numbers of African Americans in various cities in America at that time. While the main thrust of this work is on the refusal of the street car companies to allow African Americans to ride them, it also addresses some broader issues with respect to Civil Rights. He talks about equal rights in education and treatment of black Civil War veterans too. Interestingly, the author sometimes attributes the… Read More
