Description:
London: H. J. Webb, 1861. Loose plates. Fine. 17 uncut sheets, approximately 7 by 8½ inches, all hand colored, containing characters for the pantomime, as well as sets and wings, complete as called for: 9 plates of characters, two of scenes, one of set pieces, 1 of water pieces, and 4 of wings. Lacking the booklet, a copy of which is provided in facsimile: 18pp bound with string. The scenes are in fine condition except for one rough edge. The booklet is fairly common in OCLC, but the character and scenes sheets are surprisingly scarce with only one copy noted in institutions. Toy Theatres, originally styled Juvenile Dramas, were introduced in 1811 as children's versions of plays of the time. The date of publication is taken from Speaight, who states clearly the Webb issued this edition n 1861. The Miller and his Men was one of the more popular toy theatre plays, and was reissued several times in the 19th century by Reddington, Pollock and others. .
