Beige card covers with 1880s illustration of war in the mountains of Waziristan. Covers are clean, just a bit of shelf wear. Interior clean and unmarked. Reed spent a year on the North West Frontier of India at the close of WWII and recounted stories from the experience for year afterward. The book is composed of excerpts from a manuscript which Reed had written with the intent of having it published. Vol. I is blindstamped cloth with spine mostly perished, this vol. Ex-lib, foxing throughout, signatures showing, we count 4 maps. Maps are single page, in good condition with some foxing, one map has a short clean tear in the top margin not affecting text. Vol. II has leather spine mostly perished but both spine labels still present. Dark red cloth boards worn. This volume has marbled end papers and marbled edges and we count 9 maps, maps are all single page, with very light occasional foxing, otherwise quite nice. Some foxing to text in Vol. II but in general better condition than volume I. Hard to find a complete set in the original edition, a good candidate for rebinding. The first few preliminary leaves have a small bump at the fore-edge, otherwise clean and unmarked. A quite scarce book by one of the most interesting American women of the 20th century. Hawes was a designer yes -- an an opinionated one, who thought that women should have comfortable, affordable, well-made but stylish clothes -- but she was also a social critic, who thought long and hard of the role of art in the world and the responsibilities artists and craftspeople have to make the world a better place. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 184 pages .
