Octavo (8 1/2 by 5 1/4 inches) Columbus, Ohio: Published by the Author, Printed by Scott and Wright, 1833 and 1829. First Edition of "A Description .... ". Hardcover: full early original leather. 408 pages, two separate titles bound together as one book, with consistent, and uniform pagination, illustrated by 10 engraved plates (6 are fold out; plate 8 is misnumbered), and 6 woodcuts, and an appendix. Good condition: original early full leather binding, showing minimal wear, with title "Western Antiquities" in gilt lettering on red leather label on spine. Some foxing, nominal staining to margins mostly to the last pages of second title - not affecting the text, which is readable and intact; old rubber stamp of previous owner's name on front fly leaf, same name in faint pencil below title on title page, faint pencil marks to last fly leaf, top edge stained blue.

Description:
Small octavo (8 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches) Los Angeles: Westernlore Press, 1961. An Edition of 900 copies only of which 800 copies are for sale. Brick red cloth boards with embossed device of a covered wagon on the front cover. 100 pages illustrated with black and white historic photographs, index, Indian vocabulary, bibliography. Very good condition (previous owner's neat inscription and date on first fly leaf).

At the time of the California Gold Rush, shortly after the end of the Mexican War, in September 1849, Whipple and the man assigned to guard him, Cave Couts, were assigned to survey the new international boundary line in the vicinity of the Gila and Colorado rivers; as required by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

According to E. I. Edwards, who wrote the introduction, notes, and bibliography: "Of all the early accounts written by the emigrants of the gold trail who crossed our Southern California desert, none can claim quite the same degree of distinction that attaches to the Whipple Report .... "

Octavo (9 3/4 x 5 7/8 inches) Baltimore: Bacchus Press Ltd., 1992. Facsimile of the 1864 second edition. 540 pages and 24 pages of period publisher's ads., fold out charts, numerous illustrations. Wine colored leatherette, decorative cover (the title is surrounded by grape vines which frame a charicature of a happy vintner sitting on a barrel; all done in gold). very good condition.

A faithful reproduction of a scarce work. Shaw was originally from Scotland and had much to do with lowering the duty on wine imported to England. His writing is informative and humorous. He mentions American wines and in a prophetic remark states, "California seems better adapted for producing wine."
