The G. A. R. and its auxiliaries were organized in quasi-military arrangements and divided into posts. Primary concerns were the establishment of soldiers' homes, the provision and maintenance of soldiers' graves, and advocacy for pension benefits. Washington: The National War Garden Commission, 1918. Octavo-sized booklet, stapled in wrappers (23 x 15 cm.), 32 pages. Illustrated throughout with comics. FIRST EDITION. A work promoting domestic war gardens in the U.S. during World War I, using comics and humor to look at the lighter side of food shortages and gardening. Most of the work reprinted from other newspapers and magazines. The pamphlet was published by the National War Garden Commission, established by Charles Lathrop Pack prior to the US entrance into World War I. The commission hoped that the war garden would counter the negative effects of a large crop failure in 1916, as well as interruptions in shipping due to submarine warfare, and the loss of farm workers due to enlistment. Some light creasing, otherwise near fine.

Washington, DC: Judd & Detweiler, Printer, 1890. Octavo (19.5 x 13.5 cm.), 110 pages. Subtitle on cover and flyleaf: A Cook Book. "Index" (page 17) is actually a table of contents. Advertisements on pages 1-14 and 95-110. FIRST EDITION. Two hundred twenty ascribed recipes gathered in support of a beloved urban space where "The seats in the church are free at every service". The dishes bear echoes of a British and conservative culinary orientation: Clam Chowder, English Rice Pudding, Farcied (i.e., stuffed) Tomatoes, Shrove Tuesday Pancakes, Apple Roly-Poly, Pickled Lemons, Shrewsbury Cakes, Soft Gingerbread, Fig Pudding. Included is a Plum Pudding that made the rounds in post-Civil War cookbooks, attributed to Mrs. General Sherman. Seldom is the immediate fund-raising goal of a church cookbook forthrightly stated, but Mrs. Valk and Miss Newton left no doubt: "The ladies who have compiled this little volume hope that it may accomplish the double mission of helping to conserve domestic serenity and of… Read More

Potsdam: Muller & Kiephenhauer Verlag, 1928. Quarto, 74 pages. Photographically illustrated. FIRST EDITION. The first book by architect Rudolf Schwarz. Schwarz worked in the periphery of the Bauhaus and was a significant figure in the field in the twenties and early thirties. He had a great influence on his friend Mies Van der Rohe. The photographic illustrations are by Renger-Patzsch, and this remains the most elusive of the photographer's books. One plate shows some adhesion mark, but far from the image; otherwise internally fine. In striking, photographically illustrated, paper-covered boards, over black cloth spine. Some rubbing and light wear to boards, still very good. Very scarce. [OCLC locates twelve copies worldwide, with only two in the US, at MOMA and the National Gallery)].

Description:
New York: Wehman Bros., Park Row, New York, 1912. 24mo, 91, 32 pages. Advertisements. An early combined edition. Wehman Brothers was a long-running novelty publisher, issuing books for the drugstore rack. They produced an earlier cocktail book in 1891, with slightly different pagination, and with authorship attributed to Henry J. Wehman. This work, slightly shorter, seems largely built on the earlier work, and this printing finds it combined with Wehman Bros.' New Book of Toasts, with separate pagination. This copy carries a copyright date of 1912 on the title page and gives the publisher as Wehman with their address as "Park Row", an address which corresponds with the date. In later years the company moved to 712 Broadway, but the exact date of the move is unclear. Original pictorial, stapled wrappers. Covers slightly soiled, with a trace of edge wear, text age-toned. Spine slightly creased but not cracked. Very good. [OCLC records four copies with the date of publication listed as "1910s"and… Read More

St. Louis, Mo: the restaurant; A. DeBolt & Co. [printer, 1880. Bi-fold menu (21.5 x 14 cm.), [4] pages. Printed menu, with handwritten additions. Publication date from external data. St. Louis' "What Cheer Restaurant" was opened in 1877, at the "Cor. Third and Washington Ave. [Bridge Approach]", a location that appears to have been obliterated with the construction of Interstate 44. The printed Bill of Fare inside lists a hearty fare "Cooked to Oreer (sic)" including Mutton Chops, Beefsteak & Onions, Fried Pigs Feet, Codfish Balls, Sheeps' Tongue, Four Doughnuts, Cocoanut Pie, and Oysters. The oysters were served raw, fried, stewed, broiled, and "Cove Oysters" were offered. The rear panel of the menu offers the "Regular Dinner, 15 Cents" with included items handwritten into the categories. The restaurant has left a bit of a legacy, in the form of trademark litigation that served as a precedent for decades.
