Description:
New York: WM. Elliot / Tontine Coffee House, 1812. 12mo, 36pp. A clean, if fragile copy, near fine in the original self-wrappers. Contemporary owner's name inked on the title page (D. Gardiner). Removed quite neatly from a sammelband. Scarce pamphlet, published at the Tontine Coffee House, a busy spot founded by a group of investors which would eventually evolve into the New York Stock Exchange. The pamphlet discusses various economic trends which can be traced to the young American nation's lack of trade with the United Kingdom. This strained relationship would result in the War of 1812 later that same year. Sabin 85; Shaw/Shoemaker 25559.

Description:
[Washington, DC]: Handy - photographer], 1892. One photograph, measuring about 9.5" x 7", tipped onto a mount with a 2-inch border, and housed in a contemporary white enamel frame. The photograph is evenly faded, though the image and inset captions entirely clear. The mound shows water damage around the entire border, not approaching the image. The frame shows mild general edge wear commensurate with age, though remains sound. The photograph has not been examined out of frame, nor are we inclined to remove the two dozen nails and wooden backing board and disturb the integrity of the presentation. A fantastic and informative visual record of the laying of the foundation of this historic building; a very large purpose-built Post Office commissioned by the United States Congress. The image is titled "City Post Office Washington, DC. Group Made on the First Stones That Were Layed in Foundation at N. W. Corner on December 2nd, 1892." Six individuals "for the government" are… Read More

Description:
[Washington], 1915. Very good. Reasonably large photograph, measuring about 8.5" x 6.75", tipped onto a mount with a 3/4-inch border. Photograph is somehwat overexposed or faded, but generally clean, apart from a thin strip of darkening to the right margin, just barely affecting the image. Mount shows rounding to corners, but no significant wear; overall very good. An excellent photograph of a very early motorized tour bus in the nation's capitol, which appears to be stopped in front of a Chinese restaurant or grocery, with the name "Yuen" visible just beyond the bus's roof. The bus is filled with tourists dressed in full Edwardian style, and the bus's driver sits almost precariously at the front with nothing but a thin steering wheel in front of him. A handsome gent poses in front of the bus with a bullhorn - this is certainly the tour guide. An excellent image of the early days of motorized sightseeing in one of America's most visited cities.

Description:
Jefferson City (?), 1881. Hardcover. Good-. Tall quarto, pp. 124-438, lacking the first 123pp, which were excised. Binding in poor condition, with the spine perished and notable wear to covers. Contents mostly quite clean, with some final leaves partly torn away. Overall, in about good condition. An extremely dense ledger belonging to a watch repairman, in which he recorded every transaction. Though his hand is rather difficult to read, one can eaily make out a numebr of watch companies from the period (Elgin, Ellery, and countless others, from both Europe and the United States). Prices for various repairs are neatly indicated, and the ledger thus offers a detailed glimpse into the watch repair business during the second half of the 19th century. Though no name or place is clearly indicated in the ledger, one of the running heads at the beginning of the ledger reads, "Jefferson City." This might be the Missouri capital, or the smaller city in Tennessee, or perhaps another town. Though in need of… Read More

Description:
[no place given]: [not published], 1960. Binder. Very good. Quarto. Clasped folder/bunder with 28pp. of typed pages, plus eighteen cardstock leaves of textile samples. Overall in very good condition with very minor wear. A typescript which contains instructions and best practices for identifying textiles and fabrics using various methods, including observation, solvents, burning, and microscopy. It appears to be a collegiate-level project, with some experiments described. Most interesting is the group of samples, which mostly measure about 6" x 6" or thereabouts, and have hand-drawn diagrams of the patterns below. Possibly produced in the context of forensics? A nice effort at visualizing textile patterns at the granular level. We could not find any information about the author(s), nor did we locate any likely copies in OCLC at the time of listing.

Description:
[Utah?]: [artist and printer unknown], 1880. Fine. One photographic print, mounted to thick cardboard. Print measures 8.75" x 6.5", and the mount measures 12" x 10". The shot itself is slightly overexposed, but the photograph is in fine condition. The mount only has a hint of corner wear. The photograph depicts a group of about 32 (white) men in uniforms, with many in thicker coats and also hats made from animal skins. Most have a mug of coffee in their hands. Mules and horses are in the background, as is a wagon and a teepee. On the rear is written in pencil the simple words: "Out after the Ute Indians," with no further explanation or attribution. The group is very much at ease, and only half-posing for the shot. If this cataloguer had to choose one period that this image might date from, taking the pencil caption at face value, it would be the period right after the "Meker Massacre," known as the "Ute War," in the early Fall of 1879. However, their… Read More

Description:
[Colorado or California?], 1915. Album. Very good +. Oblong small quarto (album measuring about 11.5" x 7.5"). 31 cardstock leaves, with photographs tipped in to both sides of each leaf. 89 photographs in total, of varying sizes, but the majority just shy of 5" x 7". Prints are well-preserved, though the carstock leaves are somewhat curled and have occasional corner chips. The binding, while sound, shows rubbing and chips to the corners. Overall in very good or better condition. An unusually arresting photo album of western scenes, with a nice mix of natural wonders, up-close camping and hunting scenes, and even some in-progress infrastructure. Shots depict a camping hunter shaving in the morning, a horseman driving a deam of pack mules with equipment, well over a dozen well-composed shots of mountain peaks and pristine rivers and lakes, some tree clearance, a massive steam shovel, and much more. A dozen images near the rear may be slightly later, depicing a well-heeled hunting party somewhere on… Read More

Description:
St. Helena, California: St. Helena Star, 1966. First Edition. Newspaper. Very good +. 2 large volumes in newspaper format, each 8 leaves. In very good or slightly better condition, printed on brittle newsprint, and with some light tearing at the folds, but overall clean and well-preserved. A fantastic snapshot of the California wine scene in 1966; apparently the inaugural year of this (short-lived?) wine festival. Articles and advertisements discuss Mondavi, Krug, Beringer, and other vintners, some of which had been maing wine for a century, others of which were just getting off the ground. The famous "Judgment of Paris," the wine competition held in Paris in which a California wine won in each category, would not happen for another decade, and so the California winemaking world at this time, while long-lived, was much sleepier and less competitive than it is today. This supplement to the St. Helena Star, the local paper, is scarce in commerce; OCLC records full runs of the newspaper at… Read More

Overall in very good or better condition, with some mild foxing to the verso of some prints; else quite well-preserved. Fantastic group of original prints which depict women baseball players from the AAGPBL (immortalized in the 1992 movie "A League of their Own" in San Jose, Costa Rica, in a stadium, likely for an exhibition game of some kind. The AAGPBL (All-American Girls Professional Baseball League) was a wartime athletic effort meant to replace the somewhat-depleted Major League Baseball games, whose franchises had been significantly depleted by their players' enlistment in the armed forces to fight in World War II. The AAGPBL faded away by the mid-1950s, but became a household name again after the realease of the hit movie. Rare pocket guide to golf authored exclusively by women, likely just pre-war, and certainly predating the LPGA, which was established in 1950. Contents include photographs and biographies of four women golfers (Hicks, Hall, Dettweiler, and Berg), concise information on etiquette, determination of handicaps, and some basic rules and best practices. On the recto of each spread is a color illustration with a golf tip and a brief verse. Most interesting is a four--page segment entitled "Suggestion for Women's Program," which gives a number of structural and procedural suggestions for women who wish to form a ladies' golf club. Description:
[New York], 1953. Two photographs (4.5" x 9"), eleven pieces of handwritten or typed correspondence (varying sizes and formats), mostly retaining original envelopes, two small brochures, and one news clipping, all deriving from Jessica Dragonette, an accomplished singer of both popular and opera tunes. Dragonette's legacy was cemented during World War II, when she performed tirelessly for wounded soldiers and raised record dollars in war bond sales. Her efforts were so celebrated that she was awarded an honory commission as a colonel in the US military. She also earned an award from Pope Pius XII, the Pro Pontifice et Ecclesia Cross, in 1942. Four of the letters are addressed to Neal "Petey" Chapline Swalm, a close friend of Dragonette and World War II participant in her own right - she was known as "Molly of the Marines" for her efforts to manage correspondence between enlisted servicemen and their families back home to keep them up to speed and avoid a long detachment. [Lovell, ME]: [Camp Mudjekeewis], 1939. String-bound. Near fine. Oblong quarto, 4 volumes, bound together at the spine with rope/string. Overall in near fine condition; well preserved, with mild soiling to outer wraps, and some gentle wrinkling to some photographs, but generally neat and attractive. A fantastic group of four yearbooks for this rural camp for girls in western Maine, near the New Hampshire border. Altogether (over the four yearbooks), there are 59 photographs, nearly all measuring about 4.5" x 2.75", including a thin white border. The photographs are neatly tipped onto individual leaves, each of which has been printed quite elaborately in a single-color green woodcut or linocut image, which serves as a background or border for the image. Each of the four yearbooks uses a different design, used throughout each volume, but each design has a distinct, stylized camp-related theme. [Nashville?], 1920. Very good. Oblong small quarto. 28 leaves [56pp.] used, the rest blank (about half of the album). Album edges somewhat worn, but still sound. 27 albumen photographic prints, all but two of which are tipped onto the album leaves. Prints generally very good, with occasional mild spotting; some prints overexposed. Altogether very good. A contemporary bookseller label on the rear inner cover for a Nashville (TN) bookstore and one internal reference to the Harpeth River would seem to place the album in the Nashville area. A strikingly attractive photo album, whose real star is a series of drawings and design elements executed by the compiler using the standard white ink, which most contemporary scrapbookers used simply to write captions. Here, however, are elaborate drawings of a woman fishing, two nicely drawn chairs, an Art Nouveau-style "title page" border, an early 20th century-style telephone, and more, along with several pages of original verse. [4]pp. Folded handbill, measuring about 6.5" x 8" (16.5cm x 20cm) when folded. In very good condition, with an inch-long closed tear at the spine and gentle creasing to extremities. Rare ephemeral document from the wilds of Alaska and Western Canada during World War II. US servicemen in the Army Corps of Engineers, along with their Canadian counterparts, were enlisted to construct a highway between the Yukon Territory and Fairbanks, Alaska, in the event of military engagements in Alaska during World War II. This handbill is an excellent primary source, which documents how they spent their time outside of their daily work. Description:
[Cleveland]: [photographer not identified], 1918. Good +. One photograph, measuring about 9.5" x 7.5", matted and housed in a decorative frame. The photograph shows some creasing and a two-inch stress tear at the bottom left. The image is a bit wavy, but does not seem to be water-damaged. Has not been examined out of frame; presumed good or slightly better condition overall. The image depicts a series of several dozen "war trucks" driving down Cleveland's old grand thoroughfare, Euclid Avenue. The image appears to have been taken at the turn of the northeast corner of Public Square, as a later caption on the verso says "May Co. Euclid Ave." The May Company, one of Cleveland's storied old department stores, had their flagship at that intersection, a small portion of which is visible at the right of the image. The image is not dated, and as such it's difficult to tell whether this parade was a morale-building war bond drive or a post-war victory parade. Regardless, a nicely-sized photograph of… Read More
