Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. He is among the most influential poets in the American canon, and is often called the father of free verse.
This is a collection of his poems, first published by Walter J Black in 1942. This copy was printed by the Classics Club in 1970.
It is beige tweed boards with red and gold on the cover and spine. The tops of the pages are dyed red.
The book is unread and pristine. I don't think it has ever been opened.

This is a stated first edition of The War Between the Generals: Inside the Allied High Command, published in 1981.
Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Montgomery, De Gaulle are just some of the characters in his book. This book is a social history of command. It shows how the ambitions and personalities of the men at the top affected the course of the war and the lives of the ordinary mortals in the field.

This is a stated First American edition of The War for All the Oceans, From Nelson at the Nile to Napoleon at Waterloo, written by the British historians and archaeologists Roy and Lesley Adkins and published in 2007.It is an account of the naval war that lasted from Napoleon's seizure of power in 1798 to the War of 1812 with the US. It brilliantly illustrates how the British navy gained control of the oceans.The dust jacket of this book has bits of white-out on it, and some wear to the edges. There is very minor fading to the bottom of the cover. The inside is perfect.

This is a stated first American edition of War in the Desert: The Eighth Army at El Alamein. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to fight as a soldier in North Africa right before and during one of the biggest battles in World War II history, then this is your book. The author, James Lucas, interviewed combatants from both sides, and used many first-hand printed sources.
It is not a comprehensive overview of the 8th Army during the whole war in the North African theater, but deals mainly with Montgomery after he replaced Auchinleck as commander and how he began to make his preparations for the battle of El Alamein. The book brings you down into the desert with the men of Eighth Army. You get a good idea of what life was like for them while Monty retrained them for the battle of their lives.

This is a first edition of Warfare from Waterloo to Mons, part of the Cassell History of Warfare series. It was written by the English author Michael Glover and published in 1980.
Chapters are The Legacy of Napoleon, War as an Instrument of Policy, War as a Means of Imperial Expansion, The Impact of Technological Advances on Strategy and Tactics, War Conducted by Amateurs: The American Civil War, The Aftermath of Moltke's Great Age, South Africa and Manchuria, The World's Navies in the Age of Moltke and The Legacy of Moltke.
It is 256 pages, including lots of photos and maps. Save for fading to the spine on the dust jacket (unclipped), it is in mint condition.

General Sir David Fraser had two careers: as a distinguished British soldier and as a leading military biographer. His childhood was passed in grand houses in London and Scotland, but he was the son of anything but conventional parents, who Fraser sketches out in this book in all their bizarre and entertaining individuality. He then provides an account of becoming a soldier, the life of his regiment and his role as an officer in World War II. This is a stated first edition of Washington, DC, a 1967 novel by the American author Gore Vidal (1925-2012).
It is part of his Narratives of Empire series of historical novels; it begins in 1937 and moves into the Cold War, tracing the fortunes of a senator and a newspaper publisher.
It is a plain, elegant book. Gray covers, with brilliant gold lettering on the spine. The dust jacket is as you see it, with shelfwear to the spine. The book is pristine, with no shelfwear at all. Inside, there are a few small dogears but it is otherwise in perfect condition, with no marks of any kind in it or on it.

This is a first (and likely only) edition of Washington Irving's Sketch Book, published by Avenel in 1985. It is a facsimile reproduction of the The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., first published in 1819 and 1820. Geoffrey Crayon was the pseudonym of the American writer Washington Irving, who is most famous for the stories Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, both of which are included here. This book includes 150 of the original illustrations by 'F.O.C.', Felix Darley.

It is 507 pages. Unclipped dust jacket. No shelfwear.
It has not been read and is in mint condition.

This is two volumes of Washington's Irving Works, volumes three and ten of a 15-volume set published by Peter Fenelon Collier in 1897.

Both are 6" x 8 1/3", burgundy boards over fine paper. The trim and spines are leather. Both are heavily illustrated.
In both cases, particularly volume III, the covers aren't in the best of shape but it would be worth it to take them to a professional to have them fixed up. The missing bits of leather could be replaced; mainly, the covers need cleaning.
Inside, they are in near-perfect condition, save for minor waving. The paper is bright and clean and the binding is nice and tight. There's no evidence that anyone ever read them.

Rosalie Kingsmill Fry (1911–1992) was born in Canada, but moved to Wales as a child and spent most of her life there. She trained as an artist in London and began writing stories in order to have material to accompany her illustrations. Bumblebuzz, her first book, came out in 1938. This book has never been read. I don't think it's ever been opened. The spine is not cracked, the price remains on the dust jacket, it is spotlessly clean. There is shelf wear to the top of the dust jacket, but it has done its job, and there is no fading to the jacket.

This is the second printing, in soft cover, of Waterloo: Battle of Three Armies, by the British politician, army officer and military historian Alun Jones, Baron Chalfont (1919-2020). The hardcover was published in 1979, and the soft cover was published immediately afterward, in the same year. It is long out of print.
Lord Chalfont leads a team of historians as each in turn presents an account of the events of June 18, 1815 in the vicinity of the small town of Waterloo - each historian representing on the three principal nationalities present - English, French, German. The account of the battle is presented chronologically, after opening descriptions of Napoleon on Elba, the Allied Armies, and Wellington's troop dispositions, and each author presents a chapter on each national view of the aftermath.

The Way of All Flesh, which was completed in 1884, is a semi-autobiographical novel by the English writer Samuel Butler (1835-1902). It is a blistering attack on the hypocrisy of the Victorian age and Butler didn't dare publish it during his lifetime--it was finally published in 1903. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked it as #12 on its list of 100 best English novels of the 20th century.
This copy was published in 1969 by the Classics Club. It is beige tweed boards with red and gold on the cover and spine. The tops of the pages are dyed red. 389 pages.
The book is unread and pristine. Its only flaw is that tiny bits of the red on the spine has rubbed off. (The dark mark across the cover is my shadow.)

Ways of Escape is the autobiography of English author Graham Greene (1904-1991), written in 1980. Rather than talking about his life, he talks about his novels—how they came to be written, what he had intended to convey. He also details the sources of his characters and the ways in which he sought to disguise those characters. There are plenty of anecdotes detailing various escapades around the world, some heroic, some seedy. He describes his lifelong ennui, his frequent bouts of depression and his endless search for meaning of life.
This copy is a first edition and first printing of the Canadian issue, by Lester & Orpen Dennys. It is the publisher's advance copy, and contains the Review Request card issued with the book.

This is an imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads. Steinbeck dedicated this novel to Gwyndolyn Conger, his second (soon-to-be-ex) wife. The novel's epigraph is a passage from Everyman, with its archaic English intact; the quotation refers to the transitory nature of humanity. Although considered one of Steinbeck's weaker novels at the time of its original publication, The Wayward Bus was financially more successful than any of his previous works.

This is a bit of a collector's item. It is the Webster Vest Pocket Dictionary, Self-Pronouncing De Luxe Edition. It is undated but it was purchased in 1974. It says it was "not published by the original publishers of Webster's Dictionary" but it does not say who published it.
It contains 50,000 words, plus Rules for Spelling, Punctuation, Use of Capitals, Tables of Weights and Measures etc. (see contents photo)
It is bound in red leather with brilliant gold lettering on the front.
192 pages, 2 3/4" wide, 5 1/2" long and 3/8" thick.
The original owner signed the front endpaper and doodled some figures on the inside back cover. Some of the pages are creased from improper storage. But all is complete and it is fully usable.

This is a first edition of Wellington After Waterloo, by the Irish writer Neville Thompson. In this book, Thompson traces Wellington's life after 1815, using then new archival and documentary records. The work examines the development of Wellington's character and outlook, and assesses the significance of his involvement in politics over three decades. It shows the Duke was a crucial figure in the development of the compromise between reform and the preservation of traditional institutions and practices.

This is a first edition of Wellington: The Years of the Sword, a biography of the Duke of Wellington written in 1969 by the English historian Elizabeth Longford (1906-2002). Longford was married to the Earl of Pakenham--Wellington was married to Kitty Pakenham. This gave Longford access to Wellington's private papers and letters, which makes for a richer profile of this great man. Waterloo was only the peak of an extraordinary career; this biography fills in the rest of his life, up to and including Waterloo.This copy is in near-perfect condition. It is brown boards with bright gold lettering on the spine. 548 pages, with lots of maps and photographs. The dust jacket has minor shelfwear.
