A delightful presentation copy of this charming children's book, inscribed to fellow illustrator and children's author Posy Simmonds at the verso of the front endpaper. The inscription is cleverly incorporated into a drawing of a sheep sitting at a table and writing. A nice clean copy but well-read and bumped at the corners with further impact-indentation marks to the top and bottom edges of the laminated boards, covers bowing.

Original red cloth with gilt titles to the backstrip, pp. xiii, 469, illustrated copiously with photographs and maps including 2 fold-outs. Fore-edge untrimmed. The corners are bumped and the crown somewhat crushed. Neat previous owner name and date to the verso of the front endpaper. The book is square and tight, the covers and contents very clean (one solitary spot to the margin of one page). Top and bottom edges slightly dust-stained but this is a VG copy, lacking dustjacket.

Helsinki: Fraser & Merrick Pictures, 1947. No Binding. Fine. A Finnish "tour" movie poster for the 1945 exploitation movie, THE WHITE GORILLA, starring Ray Corrigan. The film opened in Finland in December 1946 and had a very limited run which dates this poster to circa 1946/7. Possibly one of the worst movies ever made but its awfulness and subject matter has naturally stimulated a cult following. The rarity of authentic promotional material merely adds to this poster's desirability. You are looking at a "tour" poster printed for distribution to the small regional cinemas and other venues (e.g. clubs, village halls etc) outside of the main cities following a film's initial theatrical run. Finnish tour posters are re-sized printings of the normal A2 lobby poster, usually slightly narrower and longer with printed margins at top or bottom (sometimes both) with spacing for information about location, times, ticket prices etc. They were intended for circulation around… Read More

Helsinki: Producers Releasing Corporation/Astor Filmi Oy, 1949. No Binding. Fine. An extremely rare Finnish tour poster for the 1945 horror/exploitation movie White Pongo. The film was not released in Finland until February 1949 which dates this particular poster to later that year (it is not a first-release poster, i.e.). Measures approx 61cm by 43cm, printed by Loimann Kirjapaino and the artwork is unsigned (draws heavily on the Eric Rohman artwork for the earlier Swedish movie poster). At the bottom left of the poster is a small image of Charlie Chaplin with the text "plus a Charlie Chaplin short film"). An unused example in stunning condition. Centre-fold barely visible, there are no nicks or tears and no staining - minor handling creases (thin, cheaper paper-stock) are really the only noticeable, minor fault. For best appreciation of condition please examine the high-resolution image which accompanies this listing.

SIGNED at the title page and additionally dated "1986" at the title page.

A particularly attractive copy of this beautiful edition - one of a very small number reserved exclusively for contributors and lettered. 150 numbered copies were made available for sale to subscribers. Full leather gilt with the New Naturalist monogram to the upper cover, two raised bands and gilt titles at the spine. pp. xiii, 460, illustrated with colour photographs and diagrams. Tipped-in limitation plate to the front endpaper which is signed by the author. This copy is lettered "C" and was reserved for the late British botanist and New Naturalist series co-editor, Professor Richard G. West, with his printed name-plate fixed to the front paste-down. As New condition in slipcase. Provenance: from the library of Professor Richard Gilbert West.
