For forty years, Brownell was an editor and influential literary advisor at Scribners. This privately distributed volume contains a 13 page tribute to him by Edith Wharton. Brownell was Wharton's editor at Scribners. 1929. This is the first printing between hardcovers of Wharton's tribute to him, having previously appeared in Scribner's Magazine (November 1928). The book also has contributions by Agnes Repplier, Robert Bridges, Bliss Perry, Robert Underwood Johnson and Maxwell Perkins. Laid in is a card, "Compliments of Mrs. W. C. Brownell."
