Johann Kunckel (1630/38-1703) was the son of an alchemist at the court of Duke Friedrich of Holstein, acted as his father's assistant and worked for pharmacists and glassmakers, but received no university training. He is considered to be the discoverer of phosphor. Kunckel was appointed director of the alchemical laboratory of Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg on the Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) in Berlin, where he made alchemy experiments and introduced glass technology to Germany. He was also the inventor of genuine ruby glass. In 1698 he became minister of the mines in Sweden, and also became member of the Leopoldina Academy.
