Lisboa: Centro de Estudos Históricos Ultramarinos, 1964. 8vo, pp. x, 703, [1]; fine in original printed gray wrappers. Schurhammer (1882-1971) was a German Historian of Catholic Missions in Asia, especially of Francisco Xavier. This is a supplement, of sorts, to his 5-part biography of Francis Xavier (1955-73).

London: printed for T. Cadell, 1788. 8vo, pp. [2], vi, 360; contemporary sprinkled calf, red and black morocco labels, gilt-paneled spine; top of spine chipped, front joint starting, but still reasonably sound; good copy. Sarah Fielding, sister of Henry Fielding, first published this translation in Bath, 1762.

Taipei: Hansheng, 1992. 4to, 2 vols., pp. 192; 214; text in Traditional Chinese; text illustrations throughout, most in full color; pictorial paper wrappers, fine. Hansheng Magazine is an award-winning project dedicated to highlighting a specific aspect of Chinese cultural arts with each issue. It was founded in 1971 as the English magazine ECHO before shifting towards the Chinese-speaking audience, and was focused on preserving folk art, research, and high production values. This issue covers New Years images depicting scenes from plays and operas. Chinese households traditionally put up all sorts of auspicious images for New Years, and one of the most popular subjects for such New Year images are scenes from operas. Such scenes marry the literary world with the common folk, many of whom could not read during much of China's history. This issue reproduces hundreds of play images, with comments on the plays they are derived from and on the artistic elements of each image.

[N.p., n.d., 1900. Stab stitched book, 4 volumes and 16 juan, original title leaves, rebound in later drab paper wrappers; pages toned, very good. This title is listed under the Serica Project's list of Guangzhou mu yu shu (木魚書). Mu yu shu are lyric books for popular colloquial ballads. They were popular through the late 19th and beginning of the 20th century, were produced cheaply, and tended to reflect the local language, making them a source for local dialect. The subject matter tended to be political, with stories adapted from novels and other sources. Their regular use and low production quality meant that a relative few such books were able to survive in decent condition (Tian, "Exhibiting the Eclectic from Chinese History" on the Harvard website). No copies in OCLC (Hong Kong with a reprint), but with Tokyo Daigaku and the Bodleian (via David Helliwell's Serica Project) listing copies.

[Xiong]: Heibei Province Xiong Place Names Office, 1985. 7.25 x 5 in., pp. [6], 4, [4], 124; three folding maps; text illustrations; pictorial paper wrappers; staples rusting, text clean and sound, near fine. Place name dictionaries, also called gazetteers, were produced by local governments to normalize terms, provide etymological information, and usually included demographic and historical information as well, as this one does. Harvard only in OCLC.
