Description:
Ten vols. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Jing hua yin shu ju 京華印書局, 1924. First edition of this history of the Tangut kingdom. The Tanguts, known as the Xia or Western Xia in Chinese, ruled a powerful state on the northwestern periphery of the Chinese world from the 11th to the 13th century. As Zhao Erxun 趙爾巽 (1844-1927) wrote in his Preface to our book, "even though the Xia occupied a peripheral territory, they relied on their military power to withstand the Song, Liao, and Jin for over two hundred years." The Tanguts had a complete set of political institutions, but regrettably lacked a national history, Zhao wrote. "Attempts to synthesize a history of the Hsia [Xia] from all surviving Chinese sources" began in the 18th century; our book represents the culmination of that process. "The most recent attempt at this type of traditional historical synthesis was the Hsi Hsia chi [Xi Xia ji]...Unlike his predecessors, the author of this carefully compiled work… Read More

Description:
Eight vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, orig. stitching. [Beijing]: Wengui tang 文圭堂, 1935. Facsimile reprint of a history of the Tangut state. "Western Xia, also referred to as Xixia or the Tangut Empire, was an important dynastic regime in medieval China, its population composed mainly of the Dangxiang-Qiangic people, and ruled by as many as ten emperors throughout its 190 years of recorded history" (Shi, Tangut Language and Manuscripts, 1-6). There was no "standard history" compiled for the Tangut state, so later historians had to piece together a history based on Chinese documents found in other corpora not specifically dedicated to the topic. One of "two major nineteenth-century works" that were printed and still survive, our book "remain[s] important to modern historians" (Twitchett & Franke, 675). It was "written by Wu Guangcheng (courtesy name Xizhai 西齋) of the Qing period. Wu was from Qingpu in Jiangsu (present-day Shanghai) and lived… Read More

153 folding leaves. Two parts in one vol. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers (somewhat frayed), remains of title slip on upper wrapper, orig. stitching. [China]: Mo lü tang 墨綠堂, 1935. Two collections of prose from two Inner Asian states. The Western Xia, or the Tanguts, established a state in what is now western China that lasted from 1038 to 1227. The Liao, to their north and east, was a state established by the Khitans. It lasted from 916 to 1125. Both countries had their own languages, but writing in Chinese was also practiced. Our book collects writings in Chinese, and the texts are arranged by genre. Xi Xia wen cun is published along with its supplement (wai pian 外篇). Liao wen xu shi is published with its supplement (bu yi 補遺) and "assembled titles" (huimu 彙目). Each collection has a Preface by Luo, dated 1935. Xi Xia wen cun has no imprint, but Liao wen xu shi has Mo lü tang. Luo Fuyi (1905-81), the son of the prominent intellectual Luo Zhenyu 羅振玉 (1866-1940), was a… Read More

One double-page woodcut map in the text. 56; 60 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, new stitching. [China]: Wei jing tang, Preface dated 1814. An early, variorum edition (1st ed.: 1777) of this great classic, the Xiyu wenjianlu 西域聞見錄. The Manchu official Qishiyi, in [the present work], offers a frontiersman's view of the conquest quite different from that of the imperial center. Qishiyi, who earned his jinshi degree in 1754, served as a low-ranking official in charge of grain supply in Turkestan. He narrates vividly the struggle for succession to the Zunghar Khanate after Galdan Tseren's death, describes the states bordering the Qing in Central Eurasia, and recounts the wars against Amursana, Khoja Jihan, and Burhan ad-Din, and the return of the Torghuts. Under the pen name 'Chun Yuan,' he takes on the persona of a commentator who reflects on the general principles exemplified by his account... "He discusses in detail the major cities of Central Eurasia and the customs of… Read More

Description:
74 folding leaves. Small 8vo., orig. wrappers (a little defective), orig. stitching. [China]: Siyin zhai 四印齋, [1893-96]. A collection of lyrics, a style of poetry with origins in folk music. As a genre, lyrics are associated especially with the Song period. Cai Songnian (1107-59) was born in north China under Khitan Liao rule but lived through the Jurchen defeat of the Liao and the invasion of Song-controlled North China in 1127. He served the Jurchen as a high official, writing poetry in the genre of the lyrics which were also popular south of the border. The book has a colophon by Zhang Rongjing 張蓉鏡 dated 1824 (Daoguang jiashen). Zhang explains that even though "the Jin held power for 110 years," very few books survive, especially collections of lyrics. Our book has a detailed running commentary by Wei Daoming 魏道明. The base edition of the text is said to be an incomplete copy (canben 殘本). Our book was published by Wang Pengyun 王鵬運 (1840-1904). Wang's studio name… Read More

50 juan in 20 vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [Hangzhou]: Zhejiang shuju 浙江書局, 1888. An edition of the annotated bibliography of philological works by Xie Qikun (1737-1802). Philology, known as the "lesser learning" (xiaoxue 小學) in imperial China, comprised studies of the Chinese script and its history, phonological treatises and lexicographical works, and to a certain extent grammar. The category was generally subsumed under the "classics" (jing 經) division in Chinese bibliographies, even though its purview extended beyond the classics to issues of general linguistics. Xie wrote his Examinations on Philology, or "lesser learning," to complement Zhu Yizun's 朱彝尊 (1629-1709) Jingyi kao 經義考 [Examinations on the Meaning of the Classics]. Zhu's bibliography of scholarly works on the Confucian classics was divided according to the classic to which a certain work referred. Under this scheme, Zhu included, in terms of lexicography and related disciplines, only books… Read More

Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Long shi 龍氏, 1884. [with]: GU, Zhenfu 顧震福. Xiao xue gou chen xu bian 小學鉤沈續編 [A Continuation to "Philological Sources Pulled from the Deep"]. Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. Zhouzhi 盩厔, Shaanxi: Lu Pi 路伾, 1892. First editions. "At the age of eight sui, one enters into the study of philology." Thus begins the Zhou li 周禮 [Rites of Zhou], one of the canonical Confucian texts. The term translated as philology here, xiaoxue 小學, literally means the "lesser learning," as reflected in its use to indicate a curriculum of study for children. By the late imperial period, however, the "lesser learning" did not mean the course of study for youngsters so much as the study of the classics by means of investigation into their graphs, their meaning, and their pronunciation. Philological Sources Pulled from the Deep built on earlier literacy primers compiled with a pedagogical intent, beginning… Read More

Description:
140; 102 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, new stitching. [China]: Preface dated 1904. "Phonology is the part of philology that belongs to what is innate; the six ways of writing characters is the part that belongs to what is acquired." Thus begins one of the Prefaces to Ding Xian's book, a learned phonological treatise that organizes Chinese characters according to their pronunciation. Very little is known about Ding, except that he was from Huaian in Jiangsu province and was born c. 1829 (aged 82 sui in 1900, by his own account). In the Chinese lexicographical tradition, characters were commonly arranged according to either their graphical structure or their rhyme. In the late imperial period, the arrangement by graphical structure became more refined and predictable, and the arrangement by rhyme took into consideration additional phonological properties. Ding's book represents these developments, arranging characters primarily by their beginning sounds (initials) and secondly by… Read More

8vo, orig. printed wrappers, orig. stitching. Beijing: Beijing daxue yanjiu yuan wenshi bu 北京大學研究院文史部, [1935]. [with]: -. Yi shi bu 譯史補 [Supplement on Translated Histories]. 8vo, binding as above. Beijing: same publisher, [1935]. After the Mongol Yuan empire collapsed in China in the mid-14th century, the succeeding Ming dynasty ordered the compilation of a History of the Yuan based on Chinese precedent. This book was published in 1370. The History of the Yuan was "compiled in greater haste than the other dynastic histories were, and in consequence it suffers from inadequate preparation and careless editing" (Twitchett & Franke, "Bibliographical Essays," 689). Scholars in the Qing dynasty sought to revise or supplement the History to solve these problems. Ke Shaomin (1848-1933) was one of these scholars. A presented scholar in 1886, Ke worked in the Hanlin Academy and as an editor of the imperial diary. He finished a New History of the Yuan in 1920. Our book… Read More

Printed with movable type. 12 vols. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, orig. stitching. Kunming: Zhonghua shuju, 1940. First edition, set in movable type imitating Song typography, of this collection of writings on arias (qu 曲), a "large corpus of lyric and dramatic songs which ripened in the poetry and dramas of the Yüan and early Ming dynasties." Most of the metrical models for arias "emerged at a time when popular songs flourished and cultural influences from non-Han peoples were abundant. Jurchen music, songs, and dances were popular and the vocabulary of the Han dialects was fertilized by a considerable number of Jurchen and Mongol words and expressions...These explosions of popular songs in the streets and taverns, among actors, entertainers and their patrons, occurred independently in various regional centers and eventually spread throughout Chinese urban society" (The Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese Literature, Vol. 1, 349-50). One folding facsimile of a manuscript. 92 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [Beijing]: [Guoli Beijing daxue chuban zu 國立北京大學出版組, 1936?] This is a study of Chinese characters with phonetic components by a prominent scholar of the Qing period. The character type studied in the present work, so-called phonetic compounds or "shape-and-sound" characters, is one of six kinds of character types into which the Chinese script was traditionally subdivided. A canonical enumeration of the six types is found in the Postface to Xu Shen's Shuo wen jie zi from 100 CE. In Göran Malmqvist's translation, Xu Shen lists zhishi 指事, "indicators"; xiangxing 象形, "pictographs"; xingsheng 形聲, "shape and sound"; huiyi 會意, "combined meaning"; zhuanzhu 轉注, "interchanging notation"; and jiajie 假借, "loan characters." Examples of phonetic compounds are characters such as jiang 江 and he 河, two words for "river," in which the three dots to the left indicate "water,"… Read More
