Description:
Durham, NC and New York: W. Duke, Sons & Co. Printed by Knapp & CO., NY. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good Plus. N.d., circa late 1880s. Oblong 8vo. (7 by 10 inches, 17 by 26 cm.) 22 pp., plus wraps, which also have chromolithographic imagery. Reproduction of three different series of cigarette cards issued by the Duke company, which was a pioneer in the mass production of cigarettes and the namesake of Duke University, among other things. Cigarette cards were a promotional tool of cigarette companies, and as an extra gift of sorts with the purchase of a box of cigarettes, an instant collectible. In the these three book renderings of the cards, the cards are artfully placed on the page with a backdrop of period arts and craft decoration that also incorporates, and accentuates, the theme of the particular collection of cards. Thus with the Yacht series, we have some sailing motives as well as more generic Morris-esque decoration. Slightly more elaborate, and also impressive, is the background… Read More

Description:
1932, 1933. Hardcover. Cloth spine. Good. 8vo. 24.5 by 19 cm. Unpaginated, over 120 pages with some content (a few pages have meagre content, so a firm count is elusive). The album scrapbook we believe was compiled by the son of an illustrator for "Rudder Magazine", active in the 1930s. The bookplate of the professional artist, M. A. Schnur, is pasted onto the inside front cover, while some work within is signed F. W. Schnur. This is also the kind of compilation one would expect from a growing child, enthralled by a parental passion, and encouraged probably by the parent. It is not the kind of thing a grown adult with an active artistic commitment to have directed his energies to create. It would appear that Frederick Schnur later became a boat broker, thus turning a childhood passion into a related career. Of the verse, most are poems written by well-known writers such as John Masefield, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Walter de la Mare, but Frederick Schnur has original pieces as well, and some… Read More

New Haven, CT, 1844. Full Calf. Very Good. An early example of Yalensia. 8vo. Signers of this album include fellow classmates, faculty and administration. Among the still recognizable names inscribed herein are Jeremiah Day (President of the college), Benjamin Silliman, James Kingsley, and an ancestor of the Presidents Bush. (There are halograph autographs on the plates of Silliman, Kingsley, etc., not to be confused with the actual inscriptions. Steel engravings in the book include that of the New Haven Square, Elihu Yale, Jeremiah Day, James Kingsley, and the Library (now part of Linsly-Chittenden Hall). Angier (1819 - 1894), the keeper of this book, became a Congregationalist minister. He served in the Union army and was at the front when Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Wear on the binding, especially along the joints.

Description:
New Haven, Connecticut, 1916. NA. Good. 61 by 21.5 cm, two sided broadside program of a theatrical celebration of the 200th anniversary of Yale College. The celebration occurred at the Yale Bowl, October 21, 1916, and included reenactments of the founding of the college and other major events in the college's history, such as Washington's visit in 1789, the martyrdom of Nathan Hale, a town and gown riot, etc. Based on the program, it would have been a celebration to rival "Gotterdammerung" in duration. Ads on the flip side. The paper is a brittle thin paper, and thus there are a few minor chips and a long closed tear along the center fold. As one might well choose to frame this, the latter defect is easily made moot. Also a few light pencil marks.

New Haven: Thomas H. Pease, College Bookstore, 1856 - 1862, and others. First Edition Thus. Half Calf, Marbled Boards. Very Good. A complicated leatherbound set of nine volumes, consisting of issues of The Yale Literary Magazine (Volumes 21 to 24, 1856 to 1859); a scrapbook (the fifth volume of this set), which is a scrapbook of newspaper clippings from the early 1860s all relating to Yale and compiled, it would appear, by a William H. Anderson; Orations, Poems, &c., which is essentially a sammelband of individually printed speeches, articles, poems and pamphlets from the late 1850s; Miscellany, consisting of three volumes, and this is as the name implies, a sammelband of diverse material, including faculty and student directories, calendars, event programs, materials on extra-curricular activities, prizes, admissions and graduation, songs and music, with some manuscript material (original poetry, etc.). In one of the Miscellany volumes, much of the material is oversized and thus folded. The set… Read More

Description:
Leporello. Paper pastedown onto limp board. . Very Good. Fabulous, highly unusual, oversized album of color printing onto fabric. Oblong, 32 by 42 cm. With 28 very large samples of sublime beauty. Illustrations capture the breadth of Japanese traditional graphic art, with landscapes, genre scenes, botanicals, nature, still life, composites of these forms, literal to abstract. All these samples are big and bold. On inside cover is a key to what each sample is depicting, and this key is in English. It also says the book was used by Shimaya, but this is crossed out and replaced by Tuetaya. The samples are pasted onto substantial card (as substantial as the outer boards). The outer pastedowns are very worn, with abrasions, etc. There is a waviness to the leaves. However, all the fabric samples are well-preserved, bright, fresh.

Selling the American dream of suburban living on credit, with a splashy presentation of the practicalities and costs of setting up an imaginary modest but comfortable house. The booklet cleverly uses a cut-out window to show the expenses, total and monthly, with a comparison of conventional financing and through G.E., with big surprise, G.E. credit cheaper every time. As one turns the leaves, another line of the ledger is revealed until the whole spreadsheet is revealed on page 31, with heating, electrical, cabinetry, kitchen appliances, etc. requiring a monthly outlay of a whopping $61.05 with conventional financing versus only $58.42 through G.E. Throughout are color cartoonish illustrations of the happy housewife, and the text is full of plenty of useful tips to inexperienced newlyweds facing their… Read More

Description:
Boston: Perry Mason & Company, 1898. First Edition. NA. Very Good. Unusual chromolithographic calendar which opens like a three panel mirror that might sit atop a lady's vanity. Closed, the calendar is 28 by 20 cm. Its full width when opened is 60 cm. When the top panels are pulled opened and to the side, revealed are three portraits of a beautiful young blue-eyed woman, the central portrait a bust, the two side portraits, full body and partial profiles. The decoration is a combination of Art Nouveau and Rococo Revival, with thick gilt serving as an outline border. The whole production is very pretty, if kitschy, with such things as the two outer panels forming a heart shape when the card is completely closed. A corner abrasion on the front panel, and other light soiling and wear to the outside.

Description:
Boston: Perry Mason & Co., 1890. First edition. Very Good. Oblong, 13 by 18 cm. Eight leaves of glossy stock, with a title page on the front cover, followed by a card for each day of the week, and on the same card, two months and chromolithographic illustrations and decoration. The vignettes are allegorical, of gnomes, a monk, Father Time, an angel, a Byzantine priest. They are the kind of illustrations one might find as frescoes in a stately office building of the day, and they together make this a most charming promotional calendar. The promotion is on the rear of most of the cards, where we find listed many titles in the Perry Mason & Co.'s catalogue of the day. (This is not Perry Mason as in Erle Stanley Gardner, but rather the boy's magazine company whose name Gardner appropriated for his defense attorney.) A very tiny closed tear and light wear besides. The calendar's leaves are held together by two strings.

Description:
London. Decorated Cloth. Near Fine. Original pen and ink and wash drawing of Olde English hamlet, snow and chidren, plus original verse by Crowquill. N.d., circa 1840s. 33 by 22 cm, and with matting, 51 by 41 cm. There are four staves without musical notation. Clearly the intention was to have a composer set Crowquill's words to music. Wonderful lyrics, with a powerfully evocative drawing on top, and the music staves and verses are laid over a backdrop of snowflakes and a gray brown that represents both the earth or the wintry sky.
