Memoir of jazz saxophonist, inscribed by himself to Madison (Wisconsin) jazz singer Dimetra Shivers and also signed by musicians Gus Johnson II, Bob Wilber, Bob Haggart, Bennie Morton, Ralph Sutton; all members of "The World's Greatest Jazz Band" and apparently signed at an appearance in Minnesota in 1974. Most of the signatures are in pen, but Freeman's & Haggart's are in pencil; there are also Shivers' pencilled notes and circles around the signatures, and other pen & pencil notations, seemingly people in the industry she wished to note. Philadelphia: John C. Winston Company, 1932. Early printing of this Newbery Medal winning book about a Chinese youth, his apprenticeship and adventures. Both author and illustrator spent some years in China, and the book is regarded as a good starting point for discussions on Chinese culture and history, though from a western colonialist viewpoint. No edition or printing stated, as was Winston's practice at this time, but the second state, with dedication text present on page [iv] and text on the front jacket flap; after it won the Newbery Medal in 1933, the jacket art & text were changed to showcase the award - this copy does NOT mention the award.
