[New Haven, 1929].. [3],66,[3] leaves of typescript, text on recto only, plus two inserted sections of typed notes, eleven leaves containing programs or pamphlets, two leaves containing four photo-postcards, and one large photograph. Original blue cloth. Front hinge heavily cracked, cloth fraying, board nearly detached. Corners heavily worn. Contemporary manuscript corrections to typescript. Internally clean. Dunning, Class of 1929, writes in the Foreword: "In writing my reminiscenes [sic] of the inspection trip, I am afraid that I have not followed a definite enough course of procedure, but have allowed myself to wander about aimlessly, writing what I felt when and how it pleased me....And I am sure that I will better appreciate my own childish viewpoints herein expressed, when, as an old man I look back and find one… Read More

Victoria, 1901. 406pp. Photos and charts. Decorated red cloth binding. Spine somewhat sunned. Corners slightly bumped. Very good. Tipped in is a letter from librarian of British Columbia's Legislative Library to Professor George Davidson of the University of California. A wealth of information on all manner of economic and cultural resources, richly illustrated with photographs of turn-of-the-century British Columbia. Though the titlepage is dated 1897 and mentions a section on the Yukon, this edition was actually produced around 1901, and the concluding section on the Yukon has been omitted. Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1878.. 190,[2]pp. 16mo. Original printed wrappers. Small chips at spine ends and edges of wrappers. Early ownership inscription of "Adelaide Forrester" in upper margin of first text page. Very clean internally. Near fine overall. This book chronicles an exciting year by anyone's standards, the life of the Fremonts from 1848 to 1850. It describes their trip to California to take up pastoral life there after John C. Fremont's retirement from the Army, their acquisition of the vast Mariposa Estate, the discovery of gold and the excitement of California in 1849, and finally their return east. Included are three letters by Fremont relative to his disastrous Fourth Expedition into the mountains of Colorado. Make no mistake, though, this account is clearly written from Jessie Fremont's point of view, and in her voice. Aside from her husband's exploits, she discusses the quality of life for women in the West, the slavery controversy in California, local politics, her trip across… Read More

Description:
Omaha, [ 1898].. Broadside, approximately 10 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches. Previously folded, some separations along old fold lines. Tanned, corners slightly chipped. Good. A curious survival from the 1898 Trans- Mississippi Exposition held in Omaha, promoting the sale of Mongolian jade carvings at a booth in the International Hall of the fair. The advertisement emphasizes the obscurity of the region of origin ("the Chinese population could not understand their Mongolian brothers except through writing") and the convoluted journey of the artwork to America ("carried in wicker baskets suspended on a pole resting on the shoulders of two men"). "Were it not for the fact that the workers receive but a small daily wage, hundreds of dollars would be represented in many of the pieces; as it is, it is possible to dispose of them at moderate prices. An opportunity is thus offered to lovers of the curious and the beautiful to secure something entirely new in the art world, something too, of great artistic merit."
