Description:
Boston: Copyright Henderson & Ross; Published by Fidelity Trust Company; C.B. Webster & Co, 1917. Octavo, cord-tied in wrappers (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), 59, [2] pages. FIRST EDITION. A fascinating long historical view of the Crown Coffee House, a tavern at Boston's Long Wharf with roots in Oxford. The text is derived from a manuscript by Walter Kendall Watkins (1855-1934) which was used in the 1917 revision and expansion of Samuel Adams Drake's Old Boston Taverns and Tavern Clubs. Includes a detailed description of the building and of its long succession of owners and occupants, as well as a history of the origin and early years and leaders of the Fidelity Trust Company. Very light soil and a tiny spot or two to wrappers, otherwise fine, in publisher's brown printed tan wrappers, decorated with an engraving of the Tavern in its early years.

[Newburyport]: Newburyport Commercial Press, 1927. Small octavo (19 x 12.5 cm.), 58, [i] pages. Advertisements interspersed. Title from cover. Additional title (page [1]): Tested, Tried, and True. "This book is issued for the benefit of the Ladies' Benevolent Society of the Oldtown Parish, First Church, Newbury"-page [1]. ~ FIRST EDITION. A church collection with nearly two hundred recipes, the majority attributed. The family of the pastor, Charles Sumner Holton (1866-1939), was not reticent: Parson Holton's Baked Beans; Cusque à la crème (submitted by Nina Holton); Madame Holton's Ginger Snaps; Chocolate Cookies (submitted by Mrs. Chas. S. Holton). Reverend Holton started his tenure in May 1897; Ye Olde Newbury Cook Book may reasonably be assumed to celebrate his thirtieth anniversary. ~ Four parish meetinghouses stood in Newbury by the end of the seventeenth century, under the care of clergy in the orbit of Harvard who preached an understanding of doctrine that would eventually become recognized…

Description:
London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1888. Duodecimo, (19 x 14 cm.), iv, 444, [16] pages. Index. Publisher's advertisements at rear. Date from publisher's list at rear. Later edition, stated "Eighteenth Thousand"; originally published in 1879. A menu for three meals for each day of the year. Each menu is accompanied by market advice, and recipes for the dishes. Dishes that are repeated supply the date to refer back in the book for the recipe. Perhaps most interesting are the "Things that must not be forgotten" section which follows each day's menu. Many of the things are instructions for preparing leftovers such as, "Preserve any cold turbot that may be left. Excellent fish cakes may be made for luncheon tomorrow" or "Make mutton pies for breakfast tomorrow of scraps of mutton that may be left." Some foxing throughout; date stamp to end blank. Hinges neatly reinforced. In publisher's green cloth; some wear and light rubbing to extremities. Generally good plus. Gift inscription dated 1889 to the front…

Description:
San Francisco, CA; Louisville, New York, London: California Fig Syrup Co, 1895. Stapled booklet (15 x 9 cm.), 20 pages. Text and illustrations printed in dark blue ink throughout. FIRST EDITION. A promotional book (not a cookbook) for California Fig Syrup, a patent medicine employed as a laxative. Also called Elixir of Senna, the concoction had no figs in it whatsoever. This booklet seeks to tie the "purity" and "excellence" of the product to similar qualities which, at the time, were seen by the public to reside in the State of California. And so the book is illustrated with images of notable scenery of the state, including San Francisco's Cliff House, Yosemite, Santa Barbara, and other popular sites. Some light foxing throughout; tiny bit of edge wear. Very good. [OCLC locates four copies].

Description:
New York: M. Barrows and Company Inc, 1943. Octavo, 308 pages. First edition. Adams was a cookery columnist for PM, a newspaper published for eight years in New York City, during the Second World War, which was frequently accused of left-leaning tendencies. The book was not written just as a wartime cookbook, because Adams thought of a cookbook as "a means of feeding the body as well as the mind...". Nonetheless the book offers up menu planning for both low and medium costs, with adjustments for seasonality. "Food is fun. The more difficult it is to get, the less variety there is available, the greater the challenge to those of us who believe it is fun to prove we are right." Previous owners inscription to free front endpaper. Near very good, in tan cloth with red decoration. Dust jacket designed by Lieberman in near very good condition with a bit of wear to the top and bottom of the spine, and light staining on the back.
