In the 1930's she became an Surrealist and abstract artist in Paris and eventually married the artist Yves Tanguy with whom she returned to America in 1939. Independently wealthy she helped other artists escape the Nazis in Europe. In 1959 and 1960 she had operations on her eyes that left her with poor vision. Instead of painting she turned to small sculptures and collages of found objects which are shown in this gallery exhibition catalog.
