Small check mark in blue pencil to upper corner of each page of The Abandoned Mansion. First measure of Farewell with a bass drum cue. Minor erasures throughout.
Slightly worn; small rust stains from a paper clip to upper margin of outer pages, slightly affecting one letter of a tempo marking. Landscapes and Remembrances, a cantata for soloists, chorus, and orchestra to texts by Menotti, was first performed at Uihlein Hall in Milwaukee on May 14, 1976, with Judith Blegen (soprano), Ani Yervanian (contralto), Vahan Khanzadian (tenor), Gary Kendall (baritone), and the Milwaukee Symphony and Bel Canto Chorus, James Keeley, conducting.

The Abandoned Mansion, the first song in Landscapes, is a brooding piece in E-flat minor ... infused with the past. Its constantly arcing melodic lines are supported by persistent tremolo figures that give way only briefly in the middle of the song to sustained chords--a section of quasi-recitative. The key to the song lies in these words: 'A visitor to the South is an intruder into the reigns of ghosts'.
Farewell at a Train Station in Vermont, the final song, is concerned with love, but this time with the bitterness of parting. 'In everyone's life', Menotti has commented, 'there is a farewell never forgotten, the pain of which never heals', a sentiment he had previously expressed in his libretto for Barber's opera Vanessa. It is evident that this section of Landscapes is ... rooted in actuality ... Over a solemn adagio figure, the solo voice sets the stage for this short scena: 'The train is late. Menotti's autograph musical manuscripts are very rare to the market, with no examples of his manuscripts recorded sold by ABPC since at least 1975.

First Edition. "Amahl and the Night Visitors, commissioned by NBC, was the first opera written expressly for American television. In writing it, Menotti was influenced by The Adoration of the Magi of Hieronymus Bosch. The work was first televised on Christmas Eve 1951 and has been broadcast annually. The roles, particularly the main part for boy soprano, are skilfully conceived so that they can be performed by amateurs. London, Ewer & Co. [185???] Overstamped in red: Jordens & Martens. New-York 785 Broadway. Hard Cover. 1 p.l., 108 pages; 26.5 cm. Composed in 1843-1845 on commission from the King of Prussia and first performed in December of 1845, Athalie was the last production of Mendelssohn's Berlin period. The first edition was Leipzig, 1849. Jean Racine's (1639-1699) Biblical tragedy was first performed in 1691. This version, with English libretto by William Bartholomew (1793-1867), seems to be the first English edition, and, with its publisher's overstamp, the first American as well. It appears to be earlier than the editions in the NUC (cf. 375: 552-553) or in the Boston or New York Public Libraries catalogs. It certainly dates before 1867 when Ewer merged with Novello. Vg/ bound in 3/4 leather with name label on front cover of Charles F. Leonard (a bass if the pencil markings are his). Stock#OB201.
