This tournament to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the May Revolution took place in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine. The best of East and West shared first place, while Argentinian masters Guimard and Rossetto gained the GM title. Nineteen contestants vied for the honors. Shared first place was Viktor Korchnoi and Samuel Reshevsky with a score of 13. In sole third Laszlo Szabo a point behind with a score of 12. Larry Melvyn Evans, Carlos Enrique Guimard, Hector Decio Rossetto and Mark Taimanov tied for fourth at eleven. Fridrik Olafsson and Wolfgang Unzicker a hlaf point behind shared eighth. In sole ninth was Svetozar Gligoric with 10 points. Pal Benko and Wolfgang Uhlmann shared tenth with scores of 9. In eleventh a four way tie Robert James Fischer, Ludek Pachman, Bernardo Wexler and Borislav Ivkov at 8.5. At seventeen Fischer experienced the only failure in his competitive career at the Buenos Aires Tournament (1960), finishing with 8½/19 (+3âˆ'5=11), far behind winners Viktor Korchnoi and Samuel Reshevsky with 13/19. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. First day cover envelop (4 1/2" x 6 1/4") Signed by Nona Gaprindashvili on front cover.Born in Zugdidi, Georgia, Nona Gaprindashvili began playing chess at the age of five. Seven years later, she moved to Tblisi, where she trained with Georgian grandmasters. Her shrewd, aggressive play won her great success early in her career. In 1961, she won the Women's Candidates Tournament. The following year, she challenged Elizaveta Bykova in the Women's World Championship and won. Her victory in this tournament brought her fame and made her a symbol of regional pride in Georgia. Nona Gaprindashvili went on to win the Women's World Championship four more times. Three of these matches were against Alla Kushnir, while the last was against Nana Alexandria, a fellow Georgian. In 1978, Nona lost her title to another Georgian player, Maya Chiburdanidze.Gaprindashvili is a pioneer in women's chess—in 1978 she was the first woman to be awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE. 84 pages with 5 plates, diagrams and table. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 7 1/2") issued in light brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine with black flora design. Edited by Bernhard Kagan.(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5392) First edition.The tournament consisted of ten contestants. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grünfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Sämisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.
Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, some internal notations, spine heal rubbed through else a very good copy issued without jacket. .

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5405) First edition.The second Mikhail Chigorin Memorial international tournament was held in the winter of 1947 in the Soviet capital of Moscow. Ten of the USSR's best chess masters were pitted against six strong masters from Eastern Europe in what would be one of the strongest post-war tournaments leading up to the 1948 World Championship. Mikhail Botvinnik finished clear first with an impressive 11/15. He was joined by six fellow soviets at the top of the table. Of the foreign masters, only Pachman (Czechoslovakia) and Trifunovic (Yugoslavia) managed to score more than 50%, finishing in the middle of the pack. Gligoric (Yugoslavia) finished 10th; Kottnauer (Czechoslovakia) 13th, Plater (Poland) shared 14th; and Tsvetkov (Bulgaria) ended up in 16th and last place.
