London: Faber and Faber,, 1970. First edition, first impression of McGahern's first collection of short stories. Inscribed by McGahern on the front free endpaper: "For Philip Murray, John McGahern April 90". Further inscribed by McGahern with a quote from the short story "Wheels": "'But that all the preparations promised', JMcG" (see p.22). Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt on black background. With dust jacket. Extremities slightly rubbed and bumped, mild spotting to edges. An excellent copy in a price-clipped jacket with slightly toned extremities, a few small stains and a short closed tear to rear panel.
